Is there a option to change the comany it uses or do I have to install it in the company folder that I want to use? I installed it into my \dbamfg folder but its trying to use the full company which has over 150 records. How does this product line up with the next generation interface setup that DBA is producing? Does the Multi-threaded claim mean that you can have mutiple windows open at once without fear? Ie such as the inventory inquiry and bill of materials? Whats your roadmap on Linux support? Some initial fist look comments: When I downloaded the demo installer Mozilla 1.3 saved the file name as 'tas6evodba.xxx' rather than .zip I had to rename it to .zip. Might be a Mozilla issues but you may want to check. The app is not multi-head aware. I run mutiple monitors on my desktop. Any dialog box that attempts to center itself on the screen actually appears split across both monitors. Very annoying. On startup it takes 10 seconds or so for the app to add the menu items to the toobar. And then it automatically expands into full screen mode regardless of the state it was in when it was shut down. I don't like the way the user gets to see the menu items dynamically aded to the toolbar. I realize that this is probally determined on-the-fly based on the config file but I would prefer you held of on the refresh events until all of the items were added then refresh. When I log in I get question marks in the user name field as I type. Is this intentional? |

For changing companies see a previous post in this section for the answer. It does NOT line up at all. The new product will essentially be a new piece of software. Different SQL, different language, different GUI, not open-source, no API's, and there will be some concessions on the part of any current DBA customer who wants to convert as to what data CAN be converted. Some transactional data will NOT be able to be converted at all. Therefore, in those aspects you would be starting with some "opening balances" type of thing. So said Mike in our last conversation about 3 weeks ago, anyway. Multi-threaded DOES mean you can have multiple windows open with NO fear. I doubt very much that ISTS is going to invest any time/resources into Linux versioning as there are probably about 4-5 sites in the 3500+ total that have anything linux. The payback would be pretty small. That IS is Mozilla issue. Applications in this price range are VERY seldom multi-monitor aware and capable. It is time consuming to program and test, and again, an incredibly small number of clients would ever have need for this capability. The rest I leave to Lynn. :) |

DBA's new program will be a completely new product, not an update to DBA so you will need to convert data (probably not all the historical data), retrain all your employees on a completely new product and rewrite any procedures. Evolution, on the other hand, introduces the Windows interface on top of the existing familiar programs so users can gradually bring new Windows capability online without sacrificing historical data or the screens they are familiar with. It is my understanding that Pervasive is available for Linux server which is all that is needed for this or the standard DBA to be stored on a Linux server. Linux workstations are not supported, I do not at this time have plans to support them. Multi-thread does mean just that, you can have multiple screens open simultaneously. There is some possible record locking if you try to get 2 people into the same order at the same time but at least the issues of screens locking up is resolved and multiple reports can be loaded to count lines simultaneously. As for the other comments, I have passed them on to the programmer. |

Thats a bummer. Is this a TAS issue or a "not enough market issue?" Just FYI our company has a roadmap that involves moving as many of our production computers as possible over to Linux. Be really nice to include DBA machines in that as well. This possiblility of Native GUI programs that's mentioned in the features. Will that be an API that available for 3rd parties to program against? Quote:

That has already happened, that's largely why I left DBA and started ISTS back in January. EVO is NOT a DBA product, it is an IS Tech Support product. DBA has nothing to do with it. They have cut way back on programming for DBA in favor of their new EziJobz product so I struck out to provide an alternative for current users who are largely satisfied with what DBA has to offer but would like to see it advance from its DOS roots into a full Windows environment. DBA's development effort is wholely directed to the new product (and the associated new system sales they hope to get) while ISTS is committed to the existing product and customer base. As long as there is sufficient customer interest in continued development of enhancements and improvements to DBA, I will continue to provide them. That is what the paying subscribers get for their $35/month. The more subscribers are willing to participate, the more programming resources we can devote to the product and the more we can do to improve it. |

"Multi-head aware" was a poor choice of words. I should have said dosen't function correctly in a muti-head enviroment. |
