Title: How to delete Items no longer used?
Post by heinzc on 05/29/03 at 08:48:03

We have a lot of items that we no longer use.
How do we delete those?
What is the safest and fastest way (like I said: we have a lot of them!!)?

Go to IN-B, enter the Item Number and press <Enter>, so that you have the Item info on the screen. Then press <F4>.

Note that if the Item is on a SO, WO, PO, on hand, etc., you can't delete it.

Can items with history (SO, PO, WO, etc.) also not be deleted through Maintain Database?

They can but you need to be careful because it may cause problems later on some reports.  At least make sure they are not in BOM and Routing files.  Purge Closed Sales Orders (Not Invoices but the "skeletons" of the closed orders from the Open Sales Order file) too.

If you do choose to delete them in Maintain Database, you need to be sure you delete them in all 3 master files - BKICMSTR, MTICMSTR and BKICLOC

How about deleting all of the items including all of their lot, serial, WO, PO, SO-history? Can that be done without any problems?

Heinz,

WHY in the world would you want to get rid of items with all that history?  Kinda like burning down a library building isn't it?

We are not burning down the library. We are keeping all the information in one company.
But we started a new company, and after we set this up in DBA, we decided to start from scratch with our entire inventor and mfg control (new part # system and so on).
We already have to many accounting entries to delete the new company and start over. We just want to delete all items and their records.

I hope that makes more sense now.

Deleting ALL is much easier than selectively deleting some.  UT-K-A Clear Data will allow you to clear out all the inventory data.  Just make sure you have a backup first.  Or maybe make yet a third company that is a copy of the new company and play around with the Clear Data program to be sure it does what you want it to.

I agree with Lynn.  Selectively deleting by it's very defintion would be based upon a set of criteria (or if>then statements).  THAT is best done at the SQL level.

But if you just want to wholesale delete then UT-K-A is the way to go.
