Title: Avg Cost for Type N Items
Post by benp on 09/03/03 at 06:43:37

We have paint in our system as a type N.  We have a large quanity of different colors in stock.  So we don't always have to purchase it (so an avg cost isn't generated). We use this on our BOM and would like it figured into our JC.

So, how can I give a type N item an AVG Cost?

A type N can't have an average cost because it never has an on-hand quantity, which is used in the calculation of average cost.  You can assign a type N part a Standard cost, which will be used when it is used.

What if we don't use Standard Cost?  Will it still work?

No.  The entire determination of average cost is based upon items that are perpetually tracked.  If the item is not tracked (type N - non inventory) then you cannot have average cost.

Just because you "don't use Standard Cost" doesn't mean you're out of luck. You'll just have to put in a Standard Cost for that item. If you want, you can even change it when your average changes, you'll just have to do it manually.

Also, if you don't enter a standard cost, the system will use Last Cost which is automatically updated whenever you receive a purchase order.

OK, let me know if I have this straight.

If a Type "N" doesn't have a STD Cost or Last Cost, we can give it a Last Cost using IN-K.  This will show up on JC-A????

For material issued to jobs in the future, yes.  It won't affect anything that has already happened.

Can we back-out a $0 material issue using WO-G, then change last cost using IN-K, and then reissue using WO-G?

Yes, you should be able to do that to correct the costs for existing work orders.
