Title: Multipule parts on a WO?  How?
Post by ITman on 04/02/04 at 09:21:35

I'm wondering if there is a way for the same parts that have the same routing information (sequences) to be on the same work order?  For example we have 25 different part numbers, however all the operations are the same (cut, stamp, drill, etc…) and they travel through the shop on the same cart.  For employees to fill out labor they have to do two parts (for the first operation about 30 sec/part, total time about a min) then record the work order (5854-4 for example).  Then do two more parts and then record the time for that operation on that work order (5854-5 for example).  Seems like a lot of work recording labor information.

Can a work order be made for all parts together?  The only real difference in the parts is that the steel used to cut them is a little longer/shorter depending on the part number.  This way an employee could just record the time it takes to do one operation to one work order instead of one operation to twenty-five work orders (for example 5854-1, operation 50, total time 25mins).

What you are looking for is what some systems do as a many-to-one scenario.....1 supply (Work Order) to many demands (Sales Orders or Kanban Orders or such).

DBA does not currently support that sort of functionality.

Actually, that is not what he is asking.  DBA can have 1 WO (supply) to many Sales Order (demand) so long as everything is looking for the same part number.

He wants 1 Work Order to make multiple different parts.  On the surface, it can't be done but it would be possible to make a seamless interface so that the user would "see" a single work order and multiple parts being made.  How much interest is there?  Could be done as an add-on.

Lynn,

Didn't we say the same thing? ;) Of course you can have a many-to-one if you build to stock and then sell from stock. What you cannot have is the ability to produce multiple similar parts  on a couple of work orders and then link them to the demand that you have as needed.

It is that seamless interface (the ability to "link" and "unlink" supply and demand orders at will and for whatever quantities) was what I meant was missing.

Ok, that is what I thought.  I wanted to be sure before I jumped into a lot of work.  I'm going to make an interface for associating WOs on carts under one 'cart' number as long as all operations are identical.   I'm also going to make a labor reporting module that just reads the cart number, then divides up time and qty between the WO's on the cart.  I can use the MTWO.WIP.CUSTORD field to store some pseudo cart number like CART456 and all will be associated ok.

The only problem I see is that if an item is scrapped, currently, just the qty is reported.  (i.e. 2 pieces scrapped).  The labor entry will have to look at the part numbers that were scrapped (i.e. RS-586 & RS-658) scrapped and look for the work order to apply them to.

I'm going to be busy next week…
