Title: side effect of ISTECH update?
Post by Laura on 06/28/04 at 11:24:24

I went form 2002.1  to the latest ISTECH update this morning.   Ever since I have done this my two XPpro stations shut off every 30 minutes or so.  They just automatically cut off at the exact same time.  Not just out of DBA but dead off.

My 98 & NT workstations are fine!

Is this a possible side effect of the upgrade?
It sounds like a VIRUS, but our DBA workstations/server are not connected to the internet.   I just hooked the internet to try to run an online scan,   but the workstations keep cutting off.

could be that I have a antique version of Pervasive and the upgrade iritated it?

Please...any and all ideas & suggestions appreciated.

Thank you.

If you are still on your VERY outdated version of Pervasive, then it will almost certainly make things difficult on the XP stations. Although I was unaware that it could actually piss off the operating system enough that it would stop...... ???

My husband just said that since they are turning off at the exact time.  It must be related to the server.

Weird thing...both XPpos have a backup.   so the problem is not electrical.

Gosh....has anybody had this happen?

What EXACTLY do you mean by "turning off"?

I actually have to push the start button. This just started today, after the upgrade

BUT (below) has been happening for a while.
Sometimes one of them slowly looses its connection to the server.   Its weird.    Our networked drive (where we all share documents) will slowly start loosing files.  At first only a few or so  of them are gone. *** KINDA LIKE THE PHOTOS IN BACK TO THE FUTURE*** Then after a while they are all gone.  But if you shutdown and comeback up, they are all there. (for a while)   Sometimes we get a message that we have lost the conection to the server.

I don't know if the two problems  are related.

Also when I mapped them I may have messed up.   They all have same domain name.

Thanks,
Laura

Yeah, I think I have an idea what is going on with the XP boxes and the domain controller with the shares. Happens when the boxes still idle for a time, I'll bet. Has to do with the fact that XP interacts differently with Active Directory (AD) on the Win2K Server. The forward and reverse lookup zones may not be set-up correctly in the DNS snap-in. Also, you may need to flushh the DNS cache.

As to the power-out thing, not sure what is going on there. Try upgrading the Pervasive to the 2000i SP4 version on the server and clean it off the clients (all of them) and then do a fresh install from the PVSW directory on the Server after it is upgraded. See if the shutdown problem goes away.
