Title: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by TOM_T on 08/12/04 at 14:47:46 I AM CURIOUS IF ANYONE HAS MULTIPLE PERSONNEL DOING DATA ENTRY IN SALES ORDERS. ARE YOU EXPERIENCING LOCKING ERRORS WHEN THEY ARE BUSY ENTERING ORDERS? IS THERE ANY WORK-AROUNDS? |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by aricon on 08/12/04 at 15:12:55 I had a client with 7 people doing sales orders with often 3 at any given time. And no. And before you ask...YES they got bloody frustrated about it... :-X |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by shadowcaster on 08/13/04 at 12:00:19 So much for the multiuser aspect eh ! can this be fixed is it the same in EVO ? JW |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by Lynn Pantic on 08/13/04 at 12:02:02 I would like more feedback from other people who may have multiple people entering sales orders. The programs shouls only be locking the actual sales order so if people are entering different orders there should not be a problem. |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by aricon on 08/13/04 at 14:34:08 Lynn, think Universe....was always a problem there. SO's, PO's, WO's....all the same. |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by Lynn Pantic on 08/13/04 at 17:14:23 Yes, but they were a large (by DBA standards) installation and didn't have the IS Tech updates to reduce locking we introduced back in September and October last year. I need feedback from more typical sized companies (5-15 or even 20 DBA users) and details as to what locks are in fact encountered and when. There may not be a way to eliminate all of them but there should be a way to minimize them if the specifics can be identified. I am already working with a couple of companies reporting Sales Order locking issues on BKSYMSTR. |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by TOM_T on 08/14/04 at 05:47:54 THE MORE I THINK ABOUT THIS, THE POTENTIAL FOR LOCKING ERRORS IS ENORMOUS. JUST TO BEGIN WITH, AS YOU START AN ORDER, THE FIRST CHANCE OCCURS WHEN YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE A CUSTOMER. UNTIL THAT CHOICE IS MADE, THE PROGRAM IS LOOKING AT THE ABSENSE OF A CHOICE AS THE SAME CHOICE AMONGST THE USERS AND LOCKS. YES? MORE THAN ONE SALES ORDER FOR THE SAME CUSTOMER BEING ENTERED SIMUTANEOUSLY SHOULD NOT CREATE A PROBLEM UNLESS THE PROGRAM IS REGISTERING THE "CHOICES" AS THEY OCCUR BY SAVING THEM INDIVIDUALLY. COULD THIS BE EASILY CHANGED TO OCCUR WHEN DOING THE FINAL SAVE AT THE END OF A SALES ORDER, P.O., OR WHATEVER? MAYBE AS WE MOVE FROM PARENT TO CHILD RECORDS AS IN SALES ORDERS [THAT'S WHEN THE NUMBER IS ASSIGNED], BUT INSTEAD OF LOCKING UP, THE "SAVES" ARE PUT IN A TYPE OF QUE AND PROCESSED IN THE ORDER THEY ARE REQUESTED. YOU DON'T LOOSE THE WORK YOU'VE DONE, BUT MAYBE ONLY 5 SECONDS OR SO WHILE THE REQUEST IS BEING PROCESSED AS OPPOSED TO BEING DENIED ACCESS. ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS? |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by Lynn Pantic on 08/14/04 at 08:19:02 That is in fact what the changes introduced by IS Tech last September is based on. In standard DBA, when a sales order is being entered, as soon as an item is selected for a line, that inventory record was locked until the Sales Oredr line is saved and the order entry person moves on to the next line. In the IS Tech update version, the record is not locked until the split second before the line is saved, then it is immediately unlocked. In this manner, the vast majority of locks on the inventory records have been eliminated. What we are struggling with now are locks that are happening but shouldn't be. For example, one user is releasing an order for invoicing and other users are entering different orders for different customers and getting locks on the Sales Order file. No two people are in the same order yet somehow a lock is still occurring. That is obviously some kind of program issue and we are working to resolve it. |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by TOM_T on 09/22/04 at 11:29:03 HAVE YOU MADE ANY PROGRESS WITH PURCHASING IN THIS RESPECT? ??? |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by lmk223a on 09/23/04 at 05:12:07 On a positive note, we do experience less records locks with the IS Tech updates than previously. However, there are still locks in Work Orders (i.e. one person is entering finished production and is getting a record lock when another person is issuing material to work orders); in Sales Orders (i.e. one person is POSTING an invoice and another person is entering a sales order or looking up a customer in AR-A - and the person POSTING the invoice has no way out because the message continuously flashes that the record is locked and does not give an option to exit from posting the invoice); in entering invoices in AP-C when another individual is entering a new purchase order. Luckily, we are small enough company to locate the person behind the record lock and we wait for them to finish their transaction before going ahead with ours, but it is inconvenient and I don't know how larger companies resolve this issue. |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by Lynn Pantic on 09/23/04 at 06:31:29 We did find and fix a problem with WO-I and WO-G having a conflict (thanks to the folks at FHC) and will work with anybody experiencing record locks to eliminate as many as absolutely possible. |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by Lynn Pantic on 09/30/04 at 13:38:48 I sent some files that address record locking between SO-B, C & F and SO-A out to a couple of testers and feedback so far is very good. Any other IS Tech Subscriber interested in the files, email me and I will send them to you. |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by dstary on 11/11/04 at 10:14:49 The fix you sent us seems to be working beautifully. I can invoice while someone else is entering orders without any lock up. So far so good. :D |

Lynn, I would be interested in these files as well... |
Title: Re: ENTERING SALES ORDERS Post by Lynn Pantic on 12/06/04 at 16:49:20 They were included in the 10/8 update. The next update (this week I hope) also includes a new SO-T View Sales Order which is an inquiry version of SO-A that does not lock files because it is not going to save back to the files. I have found that many of the problems occur (both locks and inadvertent changes to orders) because people use SO-A to look at orders. |
