Title: Server Crashed - Need to upgrade
Post by podell on 01/18/05 at 13:42:32

Our server crashed.  We have access to our DBA data files.  Unfortunately old server was NT 4.0 running older Pervasive.  New server will be Windows 2003 server which requires Pervasive Version 8.

What steps do we need to do to transfer old data to new server.

Note we do have the DBA 2004.1 CD.

Actually Server W2k3 does not require PVSW v8. However, if you have it already then it is recommended.

Anyway, you would need to do a full install of the Pervasive Server engine and a full install of DBA. Then you need to make sure you run the "clean" program on each workstation to clean off the old PVSW and then do the new client installs from the PVSW/Clients directory on the server.

Once you have done this you can copy the data files from your backup of the /default directory of your previous DBA install and ANY upgraded/enhanced program files from the root of DBAMFG from your old install. Also if you had any modifications to your RTM (report and "form") files then you also need to copy those over to the new install.

Once all this is done, do a test of multiple users logging in and try a test of your most critical functions (SO, PO, WO, etc.). If everything seems to be OK then you should be fine to go into production service on the new server.

You actually don't have to Install DBA.  You DO have to install Pervasive, then just copy the DBAMFG folder and all subfolders from the old to the new server.

If you don't have Pervasive 8 and decide you do want to upgrade, it can be purchased from IS Tech Support.

Lynn,

There are NO writes to the registry during DBA server install?

So...... :-[ which do I do?

No, nothing is needed in the registry on the server from DBA.  Pervasive, yes, but not DBA.  The only DBA related registry setting at all (and it is in the Workstation Setup) is the one for Maintain Database which is typically not needed at the server and if it ever is, can be updated by running MDBFXREG at UT-A.

Even if you go through the paces of installing DBA at the server, I still find it easier to then copy the entire DBAMFG folder and all subfolders to the new server from the old rather than trying to pick and choose data folders, RTM files, updated programs etc.  Just drag over the whole folder and you know you have everything.
