Title: Serial Control...Help...!
Post by ginawendelin on 10/12/05 at 10:02:44

We are planning on turning on serial control for about 2 dozen parts.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do with on hand quantities that have serial numbers?

DBA help file states: "You can create a serial record manually, but it will not correctly update the inventory transaction file and general ledger detail file and is not recommended."

Will manually entering the serial numbers already on hand really mess anything up?

Any suggestions?

Editing existing inv serials is fine. Don't try and change UOH because it doesn't affect the actual UOH in the inv records. After the 9-25 update, I am having issues with the serial portion of the program.

I am also trying to start Serial control and would like a few suggestions on adding on hand quantities.

What about tracking serial numbers on previously sold items. I have a quanity of 25 that i'd like to put in the system in case they happen to be returned.

Thanks

You could always do a inventory adjustment out of the item without serial control, then change the flag to yes for serial control, and do an adjustment back in; it will force you to give serial numbers.
I don't know the quantities you are talking about.  But if you were already thinking of entering records in the serial file, this would be the same amount of work, actually less since you only enter the part number once.

Carie,

You can go into SC-A and enter serail numbers for already sold items.  The key is to set On-Hand to 0 (already sold) and place in the notes,  who it was sold to and when.  This will give you a history of serial numbers and keep you from issuing serial numbers that have already been assigned.

to get current items in,  CHange the part to serial control.  then go into PI and freeze that part.  Next gather all the serail numbers you have instock and entertag counts for them.  then unfreeze inventory.  This will put the right amount on the self and add the serial numbers for each one.

Note:  when doing a PI on a serialized item,  the tag count can only be 1 so a SN can be associated with it.

Hope it helps,

Tim

Thank you !

On the already sold items - use the notes?

leave the fields for Customer , ship date , sales order # blank?

I would use the fields, that way they will show up in the history printout.

Carie,

Yes you can but the link won't be there. (At least it wouldn't go there when we did the same thing 1yr ago) but you can use it for serial history reports.

You can enter all the information.  just remember to set the quantity to 0 or all inventory diagnostics i.e. IN-O, IN-K-D, IN-K-E, SM-J-B . . will wig out and want to change things or report problems.

cheers;

tim

Entering the info into the SERIAL file will not make it show up on the Print Serial Hostory report because that report uses the INVTXN file for the transactions that occurred for the serial number in question.

All our assemblies are serialized and now generally processing OK as long as we do the work properly.

We did have a problem with one invoice and group of serial numbers that were on that invoice. The invoice printed properly with several serial numbered items. The transactions did not process at our daily close. When researching the problem a reprint of the invoice showed no serial transactions on the invoice. The serial number history did not process either so the items still show open under serial history.

We had to adjust the items out of stock. The serial history cannot be fixed which makes auditing serial numbers impossible.

We need way to me able to fix the Serial tracker or the system needs to be more closely integrated.

IMPORTANT - Serial in the Service Systems

Serial numbers to not work in the Service System

Needed Reports

When can we expect to have some reports on the Service system? Because the way the files are constructed it is not easy to create or export the data to report on them.

1. Item being repaired

I think itemid and serial needs to go someplace but not on a line. That is where the repair items need to go. We need a field for the itemid and serial so we can report and sort on it.

2. RMA processing

3. Reporting

Need Sales report like SAB

Need serial number history tracking

Need Repair History by item and group

4. All serialized Items should go directly into the system when produced. In this way the system knows who and where we shipped the item. And that location information needs to be changeable.

John,
you mentioned that after the 9/25 update the serial control wasnt working well. How is it working now, since there have probably been half a dozen updates since? We still havent turned it on because we are waiting on a fix to the service and repair module, but want to get it going very soon.

Any imput anyone has about how it is working or improvements needed to the serial control would be greatly appreciated!
;D

All the previous bugs have been corrected. The serial portion works fine for our needs. We only serialize finished goods. We do not have any purchased items that we track serials on though. If you plan on that, the reporting on what serials are in which finished goods is a problem I believe. I am sure ISTS would love to see the whole serial control system done differently, but it was an original DBA thing and to revamp it would be NZ's worst nightmare ;D

Thanks for your input John.

Its just my luck that it has a hard time tracking serialized parts that are made into finished goods! Wouldnt you know, thats what we want to do as soon as the service and repair module is up and running.

Looks like my 2 year serial tracking headache is turning into a service/repair serial tracking migrane... :'(
