Title: SM-J-L Change Part Numbers
Post by cmsk on 03/06/06 at 08:36:31

Hi,

Question on changing part numbers.  Apparently, when this is done, the history of said part pretty much ends up in oblivion.  Is there a way to change an existing part number to something else and keeps it's history with it?

Well, it's history is not lost. It's history is now with the new part # is all.

Thanks for the reply John.

If that were the case, then it wouldn't be an issue.  If all transactions from the old part moved to the new part, then great.  However, that's not what happends; when the item name is changed, the system takes it off any BOM's it was associated with and you can't do any historical checks on who purchased a part or where is was used previously.

Maybe there was a problem with your change. Every place I've looked the history is intact. Where specifically is the history missing?

Hmmm, David, that's interesting.  Even the help file gives a warning that some hitory files are be changed.  However, from what you and John have said, something doesn't sound right on our end.  When we changed the item name, ANY history from the old name was gone.  I.e., if we tried to reprint an invoice that had the old part, the invoice came up empty.  Also, doing any searching for the old part name came up empty, as in looking who purchased the part in the past.  As a test, we took the "new" item name and renamed it back to the old name and BAM, everything was restored again.  So, something is not transferring or updating correctly when changeing the item name on our system.

Can someone please let me know how to address this?  We have a fair amount of item names to change and if something is 'damaged' somewhere, I need to know a way to fix it.

Are you changing the part number (SM-J-L) or the description in IN-B?  The SM-J-L will change all part number history to the new number.

Thanks Lynn.  We just tried another part and it has seemed to work.  The only thing that I can pin this too, is that the last time we tried this, other users may have been logged in and in relative areas and the system may not have liked that very much.  Although I can't verify this... it's just a thought.  We'll be trying some other items tomorrow morning when everyone is out of the system.

I'll let you know.

Thanks again for the response.
