Title: DBA and RF Barcode scanners
Post by jduncan on 06/27/06 at 07:06:04

Hi All,

I am working on setting up DBA's data collection and planning on using barcode scanning to enter employee info and work order info. The shop floor is rather large and I was looking to use RF barcode scanners to enter real time data into DBA. One sells person told me that DBA Classic, which is the version of DBA I'm using, would not work with RF scanners to enter real time data. While batch data entry would be ok, I was wondering if what this sells person said was correct or if DBA Classic would work with RF scanners. Maybe there is someone on here who has done what I am doing and can speak from first hand experience but any help would be great.

Thanks,

Jason

we have dba classic and we are using barcoding on the
shop floor. i am not sure from where we got them but i could
find out if you need the info. we are still trying to get all the
bugs worked out, which reports do what and such. it is nice
 though!!

Anyone point you in the right direction regarding this topic?   ???

I am relatively new to DBA.  Just got the system off NT4 and on 2004.1 release.  I am now looking at how we can automate data collection for the shop floor using barcoding.

If you don't mind sharing I sure would like to get some more info on what does and does not work with using barcoding to keep track of jobs, labor, inventory, etc.

Thanks,
Robert

We are doing some scanning/barcoding.  Not sure what RF scanner refers to.  We are a forging facility...quite dirty and some of the guys can be pretty hard on things.  However, so far the data collection is working okay.  We are trying to eliminate as much on the keyboard entry as possible due to transpositions, so they have to use the scanner for everything including answering yes/no questions, etc.

We have set up a couple of stationary data collection terminals, hard wired to our network.  Our scanners are gun type-point & click.

We use AML (American Microsystems, Ltd.)  model M2800-0000.  Have to watch whether you need a USB connected one, or the older type connections.  Bought new computers and the new scanners wouldn't work.  Had to send them back for USB connections.

We have recently upgraded our scale/weigh counting system and can use a scanner on that for whatever we have barcodes-work order #, PO#, etc.  That scanner is also a gun type but it is called EZSCAN MT-7123CG.  The scale printer barcodes various fields that we have specified.

I am not really an expert but feel free to call me if you want to discuss.

RF scanner refers to radio frequency scanner which basically uses a wireless network just like one would use for a laptop or PDA. In fact the scanners we are using are Symbol MC-9090G scanners with Symbol 5131 access points that are running wireless G (54 Mbps).

We are currently using the scanners to do PO receiving and to move items from one bin location to another and are currently working on setting up to use the scanners along with label printers to do component picking for work orders, data collection of finished production and to collect labor, and to pull items to ship.

The current use of scanners at our company has greatly increased the correctness of our inventory and has streamlined the way we do production.

Also note that the system our company uses is all wireless (no cords at all) and runs off of a central network.

If you have any question please feel free to give me a call.
