Title: ROUTINE MAINT
Post by RAGINE on 11/02/06 at 08:10:28

Is there any suggested routine data base maint that others are doing? Also can any of the temp files be safely deleted? I do a full backup of the default folder on Monday & an incremental backup the rest of the week, it's gotten to the point where my monday backup is to large for the CD-R 700 MB disc so i have to manualy do that that backup rather than letting it run at night. Any suggestions...PLEASE?

Are you using a data compression utility on your data. These file types compress really well. We back-up ALL data files daily. It takes about 5 min to do and compresses to 600 or so Meg.

A really big file for us is the WOBOM file. It stores all of your work order bill of materials. If you have no need to reference these in the future, you can initialize this file. Just make sure you do not have any unfinished WO's that need these bills for backflushing.

JNAPIER,
how do you do data compression?

I suggest a DVD-writer. They, and the discs, are reasonable and the write amount is 4.7GB.

I use Bitzipper http://www.bitzipper.com/ You can use winzip or any other of many. It is nice because you can preset a backup with all the file types, names ect. One click on your desktop icon and away you go.

You can't beat the price of a 250+ Gb usb drive for backups!!  We use 3 for redundancy.  The main drive does a daily backup of the entire dbamfg directory (Mon thru Friday) and we do end of week backups for the entire server each month.  It all fits easily.  The second drive is a redundant backup that daily xcopies the primary and the third is another redundant backup that is xcopied weekly and kept offsite.

We do daily incremental backups and weekly complete backups.  These are done to tape.  The server has a Tandberg Data tape drive and we use Veritas Backup Exec to manage the backups.

At the end of every month I run SM-J-C Reconcile Inventory (preceded by UT-K-I fix binary zeros).  Then I print out the inventory value for our controller.

Thanks Clyde,
Do you purge any old WO'S, SO's or PO's?

No, we don't purge old stuff.  But we should and we will soon.  Converting to EVO has been higher on the priority list.
