Title: Cache memory setting on server Post by shadowcaster on 02/01/07 at 09:12:51 I added a bunch of memory 2 Gig to my server. Id like to know what to set the pervasive cache memory setting to. anything over the default value presented to me by the machine causes only about a 70 meg cache. If I set it to the default about 500 meg I get that size. is that it is it maxed out ? I have about 800 meg of files in the default database so I think I should be setting the cache so a gig or so right ?? anyway its running much faster now cache was only 80 meg before ! J Dub |
Title: Re: Cache memory setting on server Post by kkmfg on 02/01/07 at 09:29:47 Well, the database server is only going to cache data that is actually needed. If you only routine touch 70MB worth of data from the database then you will not see any more cache usage. You might try running some big reports and see if the cache usage goes up. Something that tries to access every record in your general ledger would be a good candidate. If it doesn't go past 70MB after that then you might worry that something is configured wrong. If things sped up for you after the cache increase then I'd probably not worry about it too much though. |
Title: Re: Cache memory setting on server Post by kevind on 02/01/07 at 09:53:48 The First time PSQL 2000i runs after initial installation, it sets the default cache size to 20% of total system RAM. This is what the 2000i documentation says. It never changes that even if you install additional memory. It depends on what other applications on your server may request memory. Ours is very stable, no applications are launched and closed on a regular basis, there is no one on the console, and free physical memory says pretty consistent. Our server has 785Meg (also NT 4 sp6) and we always have about 150 meg free physical memory. Our Cache is set to 260Meg. This is more than 20%, but we always have plenty of free physical memory. |
