Title: Net WIP on closed WOs
Post by fstickel on 06/08/07 at 08:33:49

I have run JC-M for closed work orders as part of my closing process and discovered a number of them have Net WIP running into the thousands of dollars (with WIP Variance is zero).  Most of these SO's are closed.  What is the best way to get this Net WIP into COGS and get it off this control report?

Some of the closed WO's with Net WIP are on SO's that are still open.  Will they be closed out to COGS when I invoice and close the SO's?

Normally, when I run my financials I am expecting the JC-M report on closed WO's to be zero, and usually it has been.

Thanks for any comments.

Invoicing has nothing to do with it.  It sounds like the costs weren't recalculated from the detail when the work orders were closed.  You can reopen them (go to WO-A and change the status to R and save) and then close in WO-J and make sure you say Y to recalculate the costs.   It will post the residual cost to WIP Variance, not COGS (although WIP Variance is typically set up as an expense in the COGS section of hte financials.)

I tested this on a couple WO's on closed SO's where the Net WIP amount was relatively small.  There was no change to WIP Variance and no transaction to post on either one.  But by reopening the WO's through WO-A and closing them thru WO-J, the WO line did disappear in each case from the JC-M report.

I noticed on the WO-A screen that by reopening the WO, DBA changed the Actual Start Date today.  Now the Actual Start Date is later than the Actual Finish Date.  Does that effect the results?

I also tested this on a WO closed on an SO that is still open.  Same result.  No change to WIP Variance and the line disappears from the JC-M report.

Is it possible the Net WIP on the JC-M (CX) report is an internal calculation result with no financial impact?

Thanks

Look at JC-Q for the re-closed WO for WIP Variance postings and I suspect you WILL in fact find entries for the amounts that were needed to balance the WO.

In each of the three WO, the WIP Variance in JC-Q was zero.

Closed WO 2384-8 on closed SO 2384 had $340 in Out Proc with Net WIP of $340.  AFter reopening and closing the line disappeared from JC-M.  WO-A shows Actual Material $660, Actual Out Proc $340, Total Cost $1000, Variance=-1000.
JC-Q shows Fin Prod=$1000, Wip Variance=0.

Closed WO 2394-9 had $190 in Out Proc with Net WIP=$190.  WO-A shows Act Material $2.03, Act Out Proc=$190, Total Cost =$192.03, Variance=-$192.03.
JC-Q shows Fin Prod=$192.03, WIP Variance=0.

Closed WO 2439-52 on Open SO 2439 had $1.61 in Material, Net WIP=$1.61.  After reopening and closing, WO-A shows Actual Material=1.61, Total Cost=1.61, Variance=-1.61.
JC-Q shows Fin Prod=1.61, WIP Variance=0.
