Is it possible to change a Type A to a Type R, and leave the bill of material for reference only?

Yes, we have done it with no problems. Then if we need to build the part sometime in the future, the BOM is there so we can change it back to A and build it.

With the recent IS Tech updates (Feb. 07 I think) there is even a feature you can turn on in SD-Q to roll standard cost based on item type so that when it is an "R", the standard will look at the "This Level Material" costs and ignore the BOM components but when you change to A it will roll the BOM and ignore the "This Level"

We had problems with this before the new SD-Q option. The type R parts would always have the wrong standard cost.
