On the What's New page for Jan 2011 it says:

"Change Customer, Change Vendor and Change Item Number programs no longer require all other users to exit hte system"

I'm not sure exactly what this means, because when you go to run the program it says you should have all users exit the Company. Is that a requirement, recommendation, or what? It used to be that you could not do anything in the company (I don't know about other companies within the system as we only regularly deal with one company) when the Change Item Number utility was running. Now it will let you (the first one we didn't read the warning, assuming it was ok from what the What's New page said) change item numbers while other people are in there with no obvious immediate effects. I would think however, that if someone was editing a SO, WO, etc with an item that was being changed that it might crash the program, or maybe it's been designed to just wait.

However, since we now read the warning, for the time being, we are just going to continue to run this only during off hours but it would really be nice if we could do this during "working" hours, as we have a few hundred that need to be changed.

The potential risk is a record lock if another user happens to have a record open on the part number but the worst that can happen is you abort the process and start over.
