Title: Which Version of Crystal Reports?
Post by sunmfg on 02/23/04 at 11:06:53

We want to try our hand at report writing.  What version of crystal reports will work with 2002.4 peer to peer?  A search of ebay reveals offerings of versions 7, 8, 8.5, 9, and 10.  Is one better than another for use with dba?

Thanks,
Wayne

I can't really answer your question in depth but I  can tell that I use v. 7 just fine with 2002.4  Unless there is a huge price swing b/w v. 7 to v. 10 you may as well get the latest version available...my $0.02

We also use version 7 and it works fine.  Bear in mind that only versions 8.5 and later are currently supported by Crystal, and that 8.5 won't be supported much longer.  I'm not sure the 'newer is better' theory applies in this case.  In my opinion, version 7 is the best all around for DBA.

As I don't know anything about other versions besides v. 7 I have to ask why you think that?

I think the program has become exponentially more complicated as each new version has come out.  So, I think the average, unsophisticated user like me is better off with a relatively intuitive version like 7.  Version 7 is a full featured report writer that evolved from earlier versions so it has lots of improvements.  Versions 8 and above lack the compile and distribute engine out of the box so you have to download it and install it, which isn't really a big deal.

I guess if someone is buying for the first time and not trying to justify an expensive upgrade, a supported version is a better bet.

How do you buy software (version 7) that old.  You certainly can not from Seagate.  Stores don't carry it. Who?

I use version 8.5 successfully and have had few problems.  It seems like good deals can be had on eBay for most of the versions...
