Title: Record locking in WorkOrders
Post by Karen Mason on 08/25/04 at 12:11:34

Experiencing record locking.  Thought it might be along the same lines as the Sales Order locking.

When we try to something like close a work order, we get a WOORD lock if someone else has another screen in workorders open, even if it is totally unrelated to the part/workorder we are closing.  This instance was entering finished production and closing a work order.  Was not for the same workorder or part number, but the record locked.

Also happened when in WO-A and WO-I, again on two totally different parts.

It has NOTHING to do with these files in reality. It is how these files use BKSYMSTR and/or BKYSMSTR that is the issue. If you go look at these in Maintain DB you will see that they have only one record each and CAN only have one record. When any other program needs to look to these files, it locks. The message that should be displayed is a lock on SY or YSMSTR. And as I understand it from the developers it is significant work to change this to a much more logical Level 2 rationalized table structure which would largely eliminate this.

Not if the message explicitly states that "The record in file WORKORD is locked..."  That message means exactly that - the WORKORD file has a record lock, not the system emaster file.  If the BKSYMSTR or BKYSMSTR file had the record lock, that is what the message would say.

The problem is, why is the record getting locked if the two users are not in the same work order.

Karen - exactly what point in the WO-A and WO-I programs are the users in when you are getting these messages?

We'll test it out on Friday or Monday and let you know.

Lynn,
Another record lock in work orders.  Someone was in WO-A on a specific work order.

I tried to close a different work order through WO-J but the record came up as locked.  The person in WO-A had to back out in order for WO-J to work.

Well, Lynn can argue with me (LOL!), but I still maintain that it is because of the structure of BKSYMSTR and BKYSMSTR being single record files that get accessed by pretty well every run file in the system at some point. And whether the message indicates that it is these files that are causing the problem or not, I firmly believe that it is.

We recently found and fixed a problem with WO-J canceling a work order that would cause a lock on WORKORD even if the other user was in a different work order.  Were you closing or Canceling?  Latest IS Tech Update?

Lorne - WO-J opens both the System Master files BKSYMSTR and BKYSMSTR with no record locks at all because it is not updating anything like "Next WO Number" so these locks are in fact on the files being reported.

We have recently identified and fixed record lock issues with WO-I and the WOBOM and WOROUT files; WO-J and WORKORD; and SO-A,B,C,F conflicts on BKARINV and SO-E on BKSYMSTR.  So we are diligently looking for the problems and fixing as many as we can.

I was closing the work order.  (I had previously closed it, then had to reopen it to post something).  I tried closing it and got the above mentioned record lock.   I am on your most recent update.
