Title: Add Calculated Fields to an RTM?
Post by gtladmin on 01/23/07 at 15:09:45

Anyone know how to add a calculated field to an RTM? Looking to add an avg use per month to our custom Inventory Usage Report, and also the Total Cost for a period of months for the inventory.  I can't figure out if this can be done.

Is there a manual *anywhere* for the Report Editoer that can help me not fritter away so much valuable time trying to figure this stuff out  ???

Lori gave me the company name that designed the RTM program - I found the following website to download instructions:

http://www.digital-metaphors.com/download/learning_reportbuilder.html

I downloaded a 146-page .pdf doc that explains things - I really haven't spent much time on it so I'm not sure if it is worth your time or not.

digital-metaphors is in fact the Delphi component that TAS uses for RTM's. I have downloaded and read this Doc, and it was helpful, but the bottom line is how it was implemented in the compiler. Not all the features in the report builder were implemented, like the ability to add your own variables, or calculated fields, or totals etc.. I have asked the developer to add these features but they have yet to add them.

So yes, the doc is good to read, but in the end it may just frustrate you more to know that the RTM's could do more but they don't the way it is now.  I hope that one day it will be fully implemented, but that is out of my hands.

An update:

I actually did email both Addsum and Digital Metaphors to see what they had to say. DM got back with me and corrected a misconception I had. Their ReportBuilder product is a delphi component and not a standalone program like I had assumed (without reading very much...)
They said that implimenting things that the component supports is the responsibility of the end developer (that would be Addsum.)

I also heard back from the maker of the TAS compiler (Addsum). They say that the reportbuilder component they've used is not watered down or hampered in any way but that TAS must handle the logic and thus calculated fields must be done in TAS and not within the reportbuilder interface. So it would appear that Addsum's stance is that all logic and calculated fields should be done in TAS and not the RTM itself. And so, the situation is just like NovaZyg described and isn't likely to change. It seems that they've no desire to make it easy to use all of the features of ReportBuilder even if it would seem that all of those features do exist.

Yeah, I went to DM's website as well, and I too was mislead at first to thinking we could buy a standard seat and do this stuff ourselves.  Very disappointing.  We really need better functionality in the reports and it seems alot of folks would welcome the ability to do this themselves, but looks like were stuck.   Too bad, I had high hopes I'd be able to make some really positive updates for people here on the report side....

Yeah, it appears that the easiest means of progress, at this point, is to recreate the reports in Crystal Reports. In there you can do all of the things you want. But it requires everyone to buy CR.

And you have to use a different app than Evo.  It would be nice to keep it all in the same app.
Oh well!
