Title: CR11 can't get off the ground
Post by Dawn on 10/16/07 at 07:41:23

We just got CR11 and I'm starting to play around with it.  I keep getting errors "Failed to retrieve data from database"  or "Btrieve error status: 3032".  I'm not sure waht I'm doing wrong.  I wanted to try something simple like list all our customers and addresses.  I used BKARCUST.B and sort by state.  Then I get the error messages.  I also noticed that my list under "Available Data Source" is missing lots of files.  Currently it only lists 34 .B files and I know there is alot more than that.  The GL are not even listed.   It is currently looking at a database called I:\DBAMFG\INDEX.DDF.  When I look at I:\DBAMFG file it looks like my actual data is in a file called DEFAULT not INDEX.DDF.  Is that right?  How do I fix this.  I can't even get off the ground yet to see any actual data to play with.  Help - completely new at this. :'(

I would suggest using ODBC to connect to the data. There are three steps you need to do:

Create the ODBC compliant DDFs
Create an ODBC System DSN on your server
Create an ODBC User DSN on any workstation that will use CR

There are probably some previous posts that will help you set these up if you're not familiar with ODBC. If you can't figure it, out give a shout.

I think I got it.  I ran UT-J and now I have WAY more than 34 files to choose from. :D  Nothing like going from one extreme to another.  Now to sort thru it all.  I know there was talk in the past about getting an updated list of the data files with descriptions it that still going on or has it fallen thru.  Maybe this could get brought up at the symosium next week.

Yes, you probably have all the files from every company. If you use ODBC you can/should have one set for each company - much easier to find what you're looking for. ODBC compliant DDFs are created using ODBCDDF (including .RUN if in Evo) in UT-A.

It's not complete, but there is a spreadsheet available somewhere on the IS Tech Support site that has a list of files, fields and descriptions.

Also, Help > File Names is a quick reference that may be helpful.

Lastly, if you have the source code readily available you can sometimes use that to figure out what files/fields are being used by a particular program.

As you mentioned, the caveat with any of the methods I mention is that they are not up to date. So if you are, you may be out of luck on some items.

You are always welcome to ask here for help on which field is for what. I'm up-to-date and use many of the new files, as well as the old. JEMM and Novazyg will answer, too.
