Title: User poll to see what screens you are using..
Post by NovaZyg on 02/13/08 at 10:55:25

This poll is to see what you the users are using..

Note the 12/15/07 update did fix 99% of the T7 errors (like internal stack fault, and too many pops) also a lot of work was done to make the grids work faster.

My vote is for  how I am using the different screens, but not how our other users are.
Many of the users here are uncomfortable with change and want to stick with the screens they are used to. They are particularly spooked by all of the picture icons instead of spelled out buttons! I have given everyone the option of using the "Windows" IN-A, WO-A, AP-A etc. and they are using these more and more,  with the classic screen.
No one is using all the available new stuff but me.  Mostly I am used to the tabbed view now and really like it.

I'm going to wait for things to be fixed before I start playing around with new stuff. I waste enough time on DBA as it is.

most of my customers are exposed to the t7 menus, but stick with the BK menus like cathyh described, they do not want to fuss with figuring out which small picture to click on. they do like the grid lookup, re-sorts and substring searches, but if it means small pictures, they stay with the old bk menus.

i've had one company that converted entirely to Evo, and we set their menus to T7 for all the ones avail in 12/15/07 update. but that's been the only one to actively use t7.

Well, one of the problems, as this has sort of been touched on...

Users HATE tabbed screens after they've been exposed to a form with all of the data on one screen. This is one of the big reasons that everyone here hated DBA NG. It's all cutesy forms and tabs and grids. People want to see all of the information at a glance without hitting any additional keys or using the mouse. I think that software developers get it in their heads that the tabbed format is cleaner and prettier and therefore better but users rarely seem to think so. Give them a cluttered interface with everything on one screen over a clean interface any day! This is one area where conventional wisdom is just plain wrong. People want to get at their information without being obstructed by the software. Ideally you want the users to forget about the software entirely and focus totally on the data.

We have been developing the T7 Screens for the whole system for the past year, and other then a few places we are not using the tabbed view. ARA,APA,WOA,INA,INB,POA, and SOA are the only programs we are offering the Two views (Tabbed, and Classic) to.  If a program used two or more screens in the past in Classic then we use a TAB, but the screens will change automatically when it needs to.

My users dislike the itty-bitty icons (esp IN-A), too. I've been using them for a year and still can't remember what more than a few of them are. Mousing over and waiting for a pop up on seven buttons to find the one you want just ain't right.  Isn't thee a way to shrink the icon a tad and get at least three letters on the button? (SO, WO, LOC, BIN, USE, etc.)

Yeah, and in those screens with a choice between tabbed and classic view guess what 90% of the people will pick. ;-) It's odd in a way because the tabbed screens are cleaner and look more modern but they really aren't as efficient as having all the data at arm's reach.

The only thing that Tabs could have is security per tab, So information that you want everyone to access would be on one tab, and the next tab could be sensitive information that is not for everyone.. other then that there is no reason for tabs other then screen clutter...

The Picture Icons (picture is worth 1000 words), I guess you need 1001 words...
I'll see what I can do. but I think it would have to be one or the other, Text or an Icon. The toolbar buttons are small.

Well, guess I have to weigh in here, too.  My users

-do not like the tabs--they prefer the classic look, everything on one screen

-think the icons are too small, and can't remember which is for what function, and hate
having to try to remember which tab has which info

-claim overall it's more efficient for them to use the classic view--fewer clicks, info
retrieval faster

-don't get the grids at all

They did try to use the new GUI menus with the tabbed screens, but they just kept switching back to the classic views.

I have to agree with most, as much as we tried to use the new screens, people wanting the old ones... I think if the icons had text instead of a picture of what is does more people would be inclined to use them even with the tabs

That was added in the most recent update.

Uh, I have the most recent update and I still see icons.  Is there some setting you have to change, per chance?

In the DBA view the icons have letters on them, now.

The Tabbed View does not have the 2 Letters, the Classic View does.

Oh I see, the text is in the Classic view.......I don't use that, I use the new GUI.

Wherever I have a choice, I go for the DBA view. I must agree with the writers who dislike the itty-bitty icons. It is so easy to click the wrong thing, and the pictures are not as indicative as what you might think. (in an integrated manufacturing/accounting package, just how many things COULD a dollar sign stand for?) I prefer the screens with mass info, rather than having to select the correct tab.  I also miss the ability to navigate from region to region without a mouse. (For example, AR to SO used to be an arrow click.) When I am entering alpha-numeric stuff all day, I want to keep my hands on the keyboard as much as possible - mousing  just slows me down. I want to save with F10, and have the screen pop me up to the first line of the next blank screen, not leave me in limbo. I want to F7 and F8 my way through parts screens. I want to copy an old part to create a new part with F9 again. Program capability enhancements are great, but I find the GUI enhancements gum up my works.
