Title: Inventory Label Printer Suggestions
Post by TimZ on 03/31/14 at 15:12:28

We're looking into starting to print inventory labels through Evo.  From the documentation, it appears that 1-up uses 3 1/2 by 15/16.  I'm researching this size, and have only found dot matrix printers.  Is there a thermal label printer out there with a USB interface that will print this size?  1-up is appealing because we would not waste labels with partial sheets in the 3-up format.  Otherwise, we'd look into 3-up with Avery 5160 on existing laser printers that we have.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You can  modify the label size by editing the RTM and choosing File - Setup Label, you are not stuck with the default size.    If you want to add bar codes and much of anything else to it, you will need something bigger.

I know there are 1-up Zebra printers out there, but not familiar with models.

We have Zebra 2844 scattered all over the place and we use them for many different things.

From inventory tags 3x1
to shipping 4x6 labels

For the money they can't be beat.

I purchase used/old UPS models from HippoVariety

We've been using Intermec PD4 printers.  It's an older model, but a real workhorse.  There are newer models available now, but we can still find new old stock.  We also added their EasyLan 100e Ethernet-to-serial interface which serves as a print server.  We just plug in a network cable and have a network printer that doesn't need a PC.

What do you want to make?

Where I am having trouble is determining which printer I need for a certain label size.  The 1 x 2.63 label size is what I'm shooting for, in a roll, to print to a 1-up thermal label printer.  Any suggestions?

I can't see why the Zebra 2844 wouldn't work.

We use it for 3 x 1 labels.

Looks like there's a ton of choices for label stock.

We purchased a Zebra 2844 and Avery 9170 (same size as 5160 and 8160) 1 x 2 5/8 labels.  This is just s small roll of 300 labels to test with.  We're having trouble getting the label set up properly in Evo.  It looks like our label template wants to print horizontal (2 5/8 x 1) but the label is vertical (1 x 2 5/8).  Any words of wisdom for a newbie getting labels set up properly?  Should I just buy 3 x 1 labels, or try to fix the template to print on the 1 x 2 5/8?

Thanks,
Tim

It can be a little picky,  we have the best luck sending it to the preview screen and printing it from there

Thanks to Lynn, Mike, and BurrKing_Mfg.  We finally got labels printing correctly using a refurb Zebra 2844 from hippodeals, 3x1 labels from discountthermallabels.com and lots of trial and error in editing T6ING1.rtm.

I'm glad to hear it was a success.

If you count them up, I think we have 7 of the Zebra printers in house (we only have 12 EVO license).

We use them for many things from inventory tags, shipping labels, WO labels for identification on the box.  It's addictive once you get started.

One of my favorite things is to use excel files and run vlook-ups and then print the populated information.
