Title: Best Way to Use MRP
Post by gtladmin on 03/10/16 at 08:11:49

I am wondering if people here are running MRP too many times a day (or maybe that's not an issue?).  Generally it is run first thing in the morning (and we are trying desperately to get the scheduler working so it will run overnight). But then later in the day, the two purchasing folks will run it each again for whatever they need. Given the resources it can require to run, isn't there a better method by which the purchasing folks can make their buying determinations and only run in the middle of they day when absolutely necessary?  How do you manage your MRP runs and make the most use of the data it generates?  Maybe it's just my ignorance!  Either way, I'd love some input.

Val

It's going to vary a lot depending on how your company works.

I'm not using it at all right now, but when I did, I ran it once a week. I had a reminder set to start it before I left on Thursday night, and did my reports Friday morning so I could order materials before the weekend.

So David, were you using the TAS-N program to run the MRP overnight?

No, I just had a reminder in Outlook and ran it manually.

That's a bummer. We have spent a lot of time *trying* to get it to work here. I have come to the conclusion it is vaporware....it does not really work at all, and especially since there is no detailed documentation on it any place on step by step to get it going.

Unfortunately, manufacturing still wants it.   :o

..oh well...

it will work

I run it as many times as I need to to get things where I want them
it took me a few weeks/months to get it to run clean at 1st
set the delay and buffers wide  at 1st
there are programs built into dba to set lead times and for blanket mrp settings

I wouldn't worry about expedite and delay messages in the beginning what you really want to do is get it to work for M and B messages

so run it and print an order action report with type M

make wo's what you need or fix those items (level and reorder amounts)
run it
repeat
run it
repeat
till its clean and you need to make nothing
next run the same report for type B items
buy what you need
if you don't need it fix the levels
rerun
fix
rerun
till its clean
now enter an order
or a forecast
run it
I use remote desktop connection to the server and run it there
it runs very fast on the server

I may run it 10 times in a day when processing orders
then I run it every few days to keep an eye on things others have done like scraping items, entering parts orders, or entering new items with wrong reorder levels.
