Non-DBA question re W-9
08/28/03 at 08:50:37

We are going to be dealing with a Canadian company. We asked for and received a W-9, but now wonder if it's appropriate since a W-9 is apparantly for US entities. Is there a different form we should be using?

W-9's are normally used in connection with "non-incorporated" entities so that a 1099 can be issued at year end. Since no tax reporting occurs when dealing with foreign entities there is really no need for the information contained on a W-9. There are some types of income (payments) to foreign entities that require reporting (eg. interest/dividends) in which case a completed W-8 should be requested.

Hope this helps....

I thought that filling out a W-9 verified the type of an entity, thereby answering the question of whether there was any need to send a 1099.
