Dismantling a finished good
02/18/04 at 09:29:02

A customer returns 10 steel wagons, wanting to upgrade to aluminum wagons.  Both type wagons use the same wheel assembly--for lead time purposes, the wagon company would like to dismantle the 10 steel wagons and re-install the wheel assemblies on the aluminum wagon bodies. So the BOM'S for each item:

ST-100
Qty 1 STEELBODY
Qty 1 STEELHANDLE
Qty 2 #1WHEELASSY

AL-100
Qty 1 ALUMBODY
Qty 1 ALUMHANDLE
Qty 2 #1WHEELASSY

So the correct procedure?:
1)Credit the customer order for the 10 units of ST-100
2)Add 10 units of AL-100 to the order (assumption is the order is still open)
3)Now since the credit has put 10 units of ST-100 back into inventory, what is the proper way to get the STEELBODY, STEELHANDLE and #1WHEELASSY back into stock?  A "reverse" work order or an inventory adjustment?
4)Create a work order for and build the 10 units of AL-100

So I am unsure about the best way to get the BOM items back into stock-

Thanks,

Mike

we do this

Procedure for returning assembled items back into stock:
This will not work with an F&O item like SONATROL or most Feed BOMS

1. Enter a work order with the part # with zero quantity to build.

1a. edit the wo bom if some items are to be scraped or are missing.

2. Enter finished production with a negative amount you need to put back into stock. This puts everything back into whip.

3. Kit issue material with a negative amount you are returning to stock. This moves items back into stock.

4. Go back into finished production and close work order for the qty returned. <--- is this correct or should it be 0 last cost and av cost get set to negitive

EXAMPLE: WEDSADS22205 taking 2 off the shelf need to take the high level number out of stock and return all the components it took to make it back into stock.

WO with part # WEDSADS22205 with -0- quantity.
Enter finished production for -2
Kit issue material -2
Close work order.
Note:
If a component has been taken off the item being returned to stock it must be added back in when issuing material.
-=-=-=--=-=-=

For items built with F&O you need to do this reversal with the original w/o bom.  ( FUN !! )

or..
2+3  Enter finished production with a negative amount you need to put back into stock and backflush; then no need to kit issue material. This moves items directly back into stock.

What do you mean by "F&O item like SONATROL or most Feed BOMS"?  We have had big trouble with doing negative finished production.  We have used this to back out of a finish production of a work order for a finished good that has had materials issued by sequence and then accidentally backflushed at finish production.  The serial number file records a positive finish production, the inventory records a negative, so we are now off by two.  If I am remembering right the general ledger is recording a positive finish also, so we are in a mess and it is time for journal entries and serial number edits, and average cost fixes!  Is this what you mean?

Items built with features and options have no "real" bom they only have workorder boms  so you have to back them out using the original wo bom you used to create them.

sonatrol and feeds are 2 items we make here.

I took these instructions right from the company procdures web page so its not totally generic   sorry for the confusion.  we do not do serial numbers yet looks like a mess.

Thanks Shadowcaster for the clarification.  We don't use F&O's much so I didn't recognize it! ??? I assume you mean you don't do serial numbers, and yes, it is (was) a mess... we don't allow negative backouts anymore and have an elaborate procedure involving negative sequence finishes to correct the backflush.  It's tedious but fool proof!

Id say 95 % of what we sell are F&O based orders.

Its a great way to organize what goes with what and to be able to create custom machines for our customers.

To me its the best part of DBA along with MRP and being able to create workorders from the sales order all the way to the last component.

Our old system did nothing for us except mess things up and waste our time.
