JC-B Profit Projection
02/23/04 at 08:35:12

When I run a JC-B, there are some items that show zero for an estimated & projected cost.

These items are type "R" and have last & avg costs.  The item is in inventory and we did not purchase it for the WO.

Estimated costs in Work Orders are based on Standard cost at the time the WO is created, not last or average.  You can use IN-L-E to reset Purchased Part standard cost to be equal to last or average cost, then open the WO in WO-A, save it and say Y to recalculate the estimated costs.

What if we don't use standard cost?

Also, why do some item have a standard cost & others don't?

I cant think of any reason not to use standard cost.

there are lots of reasons to use it.

I would run IN-L-E asap and get something in those empty fields  then Job costing will work properly

Even if you don't want to base any actual transactions on standard cost, it is still a good idea as John says to populate the fields and do the cost rollup in BM-G to get assemply standard costs.   The standard is simply a benchmark of what the item "should" cost and is used as the Estimated cost in Work Orders and Job Cost reports and is also used by the Estimating module.

If your component prices are volatile, you may run IN-L-A and BM-G frequently to keep the benchmark current but if you are in a more stable market, then quarterly or even less frequently is fine.

OK, thanks.

That fixes the problem, but why wouln't there be a standard cost there to begin with?

Unless you enter and roll up the standard cost, in IN-L-E, IN-L-A, IN-B or BM-G, there will not be a standard

It also seems that an Estimate will fill in the standard cost.  I'm not sure why this is, as I'm just begining to "play" around with the estimating module, and I can't find any documentation that refers to thr reason for this.
