How to buy a type A part?
09/23/04 at 18:42:18

We manufacture type A subassemblies (P/N 12345) in house. However, sometimes we like to buy identical parts complete from an outside vendor. We do this by creating a type R part with part number (P/N 12345-OV).

So far so good, but it gets a little messy with the higher level assembly that uses these parts. We have to keep changing the WO-BOMS to reflect whether they include the type A parts we plan to make or the type R parts we will buy.

Is there a better way to handle this?

Thanks,
Earle

You can buy type A parts so there is no need to have 2 different part numbers.  We do that here for a couple of parts when we don't have capacity.

Thanks - you're right.

Purchasing said they couldn't do it - I should have checked myself before posting.
