Terminal Server Problems
08/10/05 at 06:03:37

Hi,
We've been using PCAnywhere for years, but now we need the ability to remotely use and print from DBA as if we were actually at the office.
We've recently updated (following Lynn's advice) from NT 4.0 Server to 2003 Server with Terminal Server. The new server is a 3.0Ghz P4 with 1 GB Ram and SCSI drives. We have a 128KB fractional T1 connection.
I was able to get Terminal Server working and followed the instructions on Microsoft's site to 'lock it down' so that now DBA is pretty much the only thing accessible.
I am able to connect from a remote location using a WinXP Pro PC with a cable modem connection, HOWEVER, DBA often hangs for 5-10 minutes when logging in, and sometimes I never even get to the password screen (even if I leave it for 1/2 hour). Once I get in I can usually cruise through the menus and even print reports for a few minutes before it hangs again. The slow speed and inconsistency makes it nearly impossible to get anything done... does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be causing this?
I've had the same problems from multiple locations using different PC's. I realize the problem isn't directly related to DBA - even the 'applying your personal settings' screen takes several minutes to get through, and that happens even if I log in from an XP PC on the same network at the office.
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I should also note that I'm currently using the built in VPN software that comes with 2003 server and XP. I tried using the VPN on my SonicWall TZ170 but it made things move even slower.
Thanks.

For our VPN connections we use NetGear VPN routers Endpoint to Endpoint. For remote connection not through the Endpoints We use Netgears VPN Pro Client. Both connections are good and fast. The only issue is that we use MS Net Meeting to share the desktop. We need a desktop for each connection.

We have a fairly mixed environment, with NT4 on the app server, Win2k on our terminal servers, and remote clients using everything from Win98 to XP Pro. Other than one user with a poor cable modem connection, we've had very few problems. As a matter of fact, since I have an older PC, I prefer to run long routines and reports via terminal services since they run much faster on the terminal server Smiley

Some differences between our situation and yours include, 1) that we do have a full T-1, which shouldn't make a difference, 2) we have a dedicated terminal server, which you didn't mention, and 3) we have no idea what we're doing half the time, which means that we might have stumbled onto a setup that works great!

We have as many as twelve concurrent TS users with TAS6-Evo [gee, I hope that Evo-ERP isn't the problem, because we're updating to it this weekend.] We couldn't do more than one or two users with DBA because it slammed the processor needle to redline for minutes at a time, hosing everyone on TS. You might want to have a look at processor usage on your terminal server to see if something is pegging the cycles to the ceiling.

Or I  could be all wet. YMMV.

Thanks for the replies... we do not have a dedicated terminal server. I'm having a hard time finding the bottleneck - it could be the server or a problem with how it's set up, it could be the 128KB connection...
Also, I've only tried using DBA from the remote locations - never tried EVO-ERP, that shouldn't make a difference, right?

DBA does not play nice on the terminal server. It takes over all of  your clock cycles and everything stops until the DBA programs are done. At least that is what happened to us. The terminal server box slowed down very quickly as DBA activity went up. With two active users we were experiencing real problems. It seems like that would only be worse if you were running TS on your app server Shocked
