PART TYPE SELECTION
09/09/05 at 06:50:52

We are in the process of "leaning" our company.  One area we are having issues with is in our manufacturing of our SS closed end tube products(sheaths).

Our issue lies in that we manufacture in-house sheaths for use in our temperature sensing assemblies and also sell these subcomponents to other companies. Making them potential "F" or "A" types.  Occasionally we do order these standard components from outside sources for use in our assemblies, based on capacity issues.  This would make the part an "R".

We would like to standize on one part # that allows us to create work orders from our routings for product internally produced product.  We would also like to be able to order this part if capacity issue prevent us from manufacturing ourselves.  How would you set these types of parts up in the system?

The last issue would be when the part heads to final inspection.  How would you note if the part needs to be sent to shipping to box or sent to a bin box for use in an assembly?

As a general rule, most sheaths are manufactured from raw material set up in the system.

Since you cannot make WOs for type R parts, but you can issue POs for type A or F, I'd go with one of those. I don't know that it makes any difference which one.

So if we put a "F" type good in a BOM our reorder report will drive us to create a work order for the part?  Then can we create a customer called "stock" so that when the parts are going through QA the tech will know to give the parts to shipping if a customer is on the traveler or put them in the stock bin if the traveler is listed to "stock".

We create a customer with our Company name, and in the purchase order field, enter "BUILD TO STOCK" so once completed, the items will go into inventory and not to shipping to an enduser customer.

We did check into further - It appears that "A" is a better selection.
