Has anyone ran into trouble with the latest update and small business server 2003?  I have had a significant failure however all of the hardware checks out.  I waited to install the patch until mid last week and we crashed last night.  Our network consultant has never seen anything like what we have experienced and the only differentiating factor is dba...thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

What do you mean by significant failure? OS crash? Can you get into windows?

Right now it appears that the memory got jammed somehow causing the raid and the server to crash.  We had to reseat the memory and remove one of the raid disks to get back online.  When we came back online, all of the data from the past five weeks is gone.  When we had the removed disk scanned, the data was exactly the same as the disk that is functioning in the server - all data for the past five weeks is gone.  Backups look the same...

All of the diagnostics on the hardware are coming back ok so we are looking at what variables have changed recently...the only one I have is the application of the 2/28 update which was done last week on Tuesday evening.  As a result of the patch being applied, I noticed reports crawling but no warnings were flagged...we are all stumped to the 'whys" of the failure...

Thoughts?

Very strange. Losing a certain time frame of data is unheard of. All data or just DBA Data? When a disk gets written to, the data is all over the place. If a disc fails, you usually lose all data. A virus could corrupt a drive or erase data, but not just the past 5 weeks. Do you have daily backups? Look in your event viewer and look for any strange things happining there. It almost sounds like the raid controller was having issues?

John,

You are correct - it is very very odd!  All data from the past five weeks is gone.  The event log has a bunch of errors for exchange dated back on 2/22 but then there is nothing after that.  What ever happened impacted the backups as well.  We are all shaking our heads here.  Ontrack is working on the disk to see what they can figure out.  We had tape backups as well as shadow copy.  So far they all stop at 2/22.  Something went terribly wrong Monday night and there is nothing in the event viewer from 2/22 until we got it back online yesterday...right now I have nothing that will rule dba out or in, however since it was the most recent change to the server, it has people wondering...

Sorry for all the questions, I'm sure you are AHTE in your mess. Does DBA start and just the data is gone or is the entire program gone? Did this just affect DBA or all other programs as well. I could see loosing some sectors of a drive, but it would not be so exact as to what gets lost. Are the folders, files gone or just corrupt? Scary Stuff!!!!!!!!

John - you are so correct I think I need a bullet or a really really stiff drink tonight!  DBA does execute ok and actually everyone thought all was fine and well until I looked at the open PO's and saw the dates.

It has impacted other data as well.  Email is gone from 2/23 until yesterday, any other files that were added to the server in personal folders are also gone.  If I would not have known better, I would have thought someone erased all of the files after a particular date.  That however does not make sense because with dba alone, the database files would have been gone since we are in it and using it all the time.   It also does not jive with the memory issue...

I think a trip to tahitti sounds pretty good right about now...thanks for letting me rant!

As odd as this sounds, it looks like your 2-22 backup was restored to your drive? If it was a mallicious attack or an employee accidentally deleting files, the whole table would be gone not just a date range? All E-mail would be gone ect.

I would have to agree here.  There is basically nothing short of a restored backup that would cause a running system to lose 5 weeks of data, nearly exactly, and nothing else. It's not like that data was stored in files called March30-2007.DATA the data was in files that held info for potentially years worth of data.

If one were to use RAID 5 then the data is also striped across all drives and redundant. There just is no explanation short of a restored backup. Now, it could have been an accident. Chances are, whoever did that accident isn't going to want to say so.

Data just plain does not fail in the sort of manner described here. It's not just uncanny it's like getting struck by lightning eight times while underground.

Have EVO/DBA running on SMB2003 R1 and R2.  Have not had any problems other than terminal services.  You can not run Terminal Services and Active Directory on the same machine!  Since SMB2003 automatically install Active Directory you can't use terminal services.

I have seen a problem on Windows 2003 with the latest patches from microsoft.  When you run Evo it tells you it's not an authorized app and you have to authorize it every time.  This is casued by a patch for IE7 that is actually for Vista PCs.  You have to go into IE7 and and add the ISTS directory to the trusted intranet sources.

If you are losing data across the board from a specific date, I would look at your hardware.  Make sure you have the latest firmware for your hard drives and controllers.  I have seen a couple of issue with Firmware on HP, LSI and EMC Raid controllers where data all of a suden gets dropped for no reason at all.

Hope it helps,
