Snap Server and DBA
02/09/06 at 14:50:31

Does anyone have DBA installed on a snap server?  We are still running DBA from our old server and want to relocate it to our relatively new snap server.  Before making the switch, I thought I'd see if anyone has had any experience with this.

Unless it's a special version, I don't believe it will work. It's purpose is storage, like an extra hard drive - you need to be able to run applications on it.  If you just want to store your DBA data on it that should work fine.

The Snap Server has some features that go beyond basic storage but is basically just extra drive space on the network with some bells and whistles.

I don't believe it will run any applications beyond basic file serving, storage and backup.

David and Tim - thanks for answering my question.  That's what our guys thought here but they weren't 100% sure.  Thanks again, you saved me a lot of time and headaches.

David is correct,

It is a distributed storage box.  As long as the LUN you setup on the VA is dedicated to the server running Pervasive you won't have a problem.  However,  Dont even think about using it for clustering!  Pervasive can not handle fail-over so although your data will be available from the second server,  the engine will not.

The best part about using a snap server isthe ability to "snapshot" a LUN just before backup.  what this does is allow you to backup all data on the drive even if it's being accessed!  You never miss a file becasue someone has it open!

Hope it helps,

Tim
