copying files from one company to another
02/20/06 at 14:39:54

I need to copy inventory items from company A to company B and I was given the names of the files to copy ex(BKICMSTR) to a temporary folder, then rename it to the new company B and copy this renamed folder to the company B folder replacing the existing information.

I have two problems with this.
1. I dont want to loose my current inventory items in company B I only want to add to it.

2. now this is really stupid question -but i need instructions as to where i go to access these files and copy them.I've never done anything like this before.  Do i go to export??

i would really appreciate any help or if theres a section in the help menu on dba/evo which section(I couldn't find anything)

If you copy and rename any file, you will replace all existing data. You can export data from A than import into B. If you search these forums for IMPORT you can see all the different challenges invloved. Their are many different approaches you can take with import/export.

The following is based on instructions I received from Lynn and have used several times to update prices, add data, etc. I have never used it to do what you want to do, but based on how it works I'm 99.85% sure it will work, and would use it myself if I needed to accomplish what you're doing.

Make a backup and get everybody out of DBA (you will need DBA, so you can keep it open as long as you don't have any modules open).

Make sure you have a good backup.

This assumes you are familiar with DBA file naming conventions, that "Company A" code is "A" and "Company B" code is "B".

Using Windows Explorer,

Delete the following files:
    BKICEMTR.BB
    BKICELOC.BB
    MTICEMTR.BB
These are the temporary data import files in company B.

Copy the following files:
    BKICMSTR.BA to BKICEMTR.BB
    BKICLOC.BA to BKICELOC.BB
    MTICMSTR.BA to MTICEMTR.BB
This makes the live inventory files from company A the temporary inventory files in company B.

Then go into DBA Company B, and run the DE Inventory Error report DE-I-A to confirm you haven't introduced errors.

Run DE-M to add the temp files to DBA live data.

Voila!

We use this procedure from Lynn often!  It has enabled us to update many inventory items very quickly.

Note:  If you have a column make sure you have what info you want in it.... otherwise if you import a blank cell the outcome will be blank.  (I found this out the hard way... but using this import helped me fix it without much pain.)

Also, make sure that your export info is not "old".  We had an excel file whating for a "bug fix" ready to go.  A couple of months pasted and when we finally got the info imported I received errors ONLY because I deleted parts in the mean time.
