Image links

I am trying to understand just how we would use the image links so I am playing with the process in our test company.
One area I am not getting is pdf's.  I can link a pdf file to an item and see it listed but when I click on it it doesn't open.  I did go to the file and right click the pdf document and there is no print option.  How do I change the pdf file so that I can print it?

In the setup screen, the printing options include a SO1 and IN1-  what are these?  I am assuming INV is invoice.

Cathy,

Are you running Adobe Acrobat or something else for PDF files?  Acrobat has the DDE (Where the print buttin comes from when you right click) code to print directly.

If your using something else to view PDFs then that application needs to be set up.

Acrobat uses a bunch of registry entries to do DDE since it can be a container and a server so I can't give you the entries.

If your using Acrobat,  Unistall and reinstall.  If you are using something like CutePDF,  You can use Adobe Acrobat with it as a viewer.

Hope it helps,

Tim

Thanks, Tim for your reply.  Even though I don't know much about DDE.....

I did uninstall and reinstall Adobe and that did not change anything, but at least I got the latest version!

I did  a search in Adobe Support and found an entry about a setting in the File/Print, the Advanced Button, for the open pdf file-  check "Print as image"
This worked- the file opens now when I click the camera icon and all my linked docs print (none of them were printing, I guess since the pdf was #1)

How do you "get Adobe to do DDE"?

Now I wonder how I can get that setting for all pdf's without having to go into each one and changing it.

Cathy,

To get to DDE open explorer, choose tools and folder options.  click the file type tab and enter PDF to get the dde entry for pdf files.   click advanced and you should have an entry for open.

Even though DDE is checked there is no DDE message because it's call in the registry.

Are you an administrator on the system when you installed?  If not that can be your problem.

If you messed with the DDE settings before you uninstalled and reinstalled, you may have to delete the DDE settings,  the acrobat plugin and then do a detect and repair within acrobat.

Hope it helps,

Tim

Still having problems with PDF's. The pdf printed with the traveler, but not with the acknowledgement.  I have the link set up to print with ALL forms so that is not the problem.
Today I checked out the DDE setting-- Tools/Folder Options/File type/PDF/advanced/action: open/edit ---DDE was not checked.  When I checked it and closed the file type window and went back in it was unchecked again.  Is this supposed to be checked and do I have to add any other information to that screen? You said DDE message is blank, are all the other entries supposed to be blank also?
I have never even looked at this before.  I uninstalled and reinstalled Reader 7.0.7 yesterday.
I'm wasting a lot of paper here trying to see if documents are printing!

Cathy,

It looks like you have a problem with DDE and your system is using arg(v) arg(c) (old DOS command line system).

Let me do some checking on what system services need to be running for DDE to work correctly.

Tim,
Thanks for all  your help!
One odd thing- I think its odd, anyway-- when I right click on the pdf file, I have 2 opens-  "Open with Adobe Reader 7.0.7" which is bold (default), and "Open".  When I look at folder options/ file type/PDF/ advanced, the action is called open.  Is this causing a problem?

Cathy,

It could be.  The one in bold is the default method with a double left click.  The second is the generic Windows Open (when you double click a file and it says there's no program associated with it.)  You could have had a differnt association with PDF files from a previous app or install that does not allow the print command.

What I would recommend is uninstalling Acrobat,  Deleting all acrobat directories (c:\program files\adobe\acrobat xx)  Delete all the DDE/Ext links.  Edit the registry and delete all references to adobe (ONLY IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND DON"T HAVE ANY OTHER ADOBE APPLIATIONS INSTALLED!)
Your PDF files should look like an unknown file type and a right click open should ask you for the associated app.

Then reinstall.  You should only have an "open" under the DDE entry but a right click should have Open with Adobe Acrobat, Open(Generic Application), and print.

Hope it helps,

Tim
