UPS label printer hangs/ODBC export
05/04/06 at 05:20:14

We use an ODBC link from UPS WorldShip (documented under General DBA Topics/UPS tracking no into DBA).  When a shipment is done, the label is sent to the printer and the ODBC link transmits the shipping info.  Intermittently, the broken network icon appears in the system tray before the label comes out (label info sent to printer but not yet printed, ODBC link talking).  When you reboot, the label prints.  We don't see other net problems.  Ideas?

Pervasive V9 SP1 peer-to-peer (was same on V8)
only TCP/IP enabled in Pervasive
all stations Win XP Pro
2004.1 DBA classic, ISTS 1/12/06

sure sounds like an interruption is occuring on your network traffic somewhere, either from a router recycling, or cabling problem, or some service restarting, etc.

one thing you can do, which might help. in pervasive, is to turn the "auto reconnect" to on. you have to set that setting at both the server and on the workstation. that way, pervasive will do it's best at trying to maintain it's own connection to the server on the established protocol. it adds a lil bit to the overhead on network traffic. but i don't think it will be that noticeable.

on client and server. start up the PCC, there on the start page of the PCC, is "configure microkernel router" select that.
now select the "communication portocols" and place a check mark on the "enable auto reconnect". apply and close.

once you make that change on the server, either STOP and RESTART both Pervasive Transactional and Relational Service, or reboot the server.

on the client. just apply the changes.

that should help.

Auto reconnect is on.

I still have no idea what's happening, or how to find out.

again, if the network is intermittantly disconnecting, then it is something on your network. setting the pervasive AutoRecconnect to ON is only to help your EVO maintain it's data flow from client to server. it does Not solve your problem with your network communication.

i've seen routers that will cycle on and off, as well as loose wire connections. best to have an IT company that knows what they are doing to come and trouble shoot.

you might see if that connection occurs at a set time of the day, or if it's a set interval. also compare with other workstations to see if they experience the same network connect / disconnect that your workstation does.

the more you know........
