Problem with August patch
09/28/06 at 04:59:12

Just installed the 8/11/06 update today and with windows 98 workstations we are having a problem with EVO. User can login to EVO and the shell comes up, but we you try to run any program, EVO hangs. There is an underlaying message box that says "A call to an OS function failed". DBA Classic works fine on these machines with the update. This doesn't seem to be a problem on any of our winxp workstations. Our setup is client/server, pervasive 2000i, novell 6.5 server, mix of win98 and winxp workstations.

Can anyone share some insight on why Windows98 work stations won't update properly with the August update?

My poor coworker has gone from EVO back to DBA until we get this resolved. Or is it time to buy newer equipment??

What exactly is the error you are getting? it is not something  we are doing that would stop Win98 from running as far as I know.   Send me screen shots...

I am running the August update on my Win98 machine just fine (except for the normal problems with Win98 Wink )
so it is capable of running on that OS.

We have 4 workstations Win98 that did not properly update.  PMOSER said it was a runtime error and will better explain.

We have 5 win98 workstations that EVO is installed on and 4 of these have this problem. The win98 computer that does run EVO alright has exactly the same hardware as some of the computers that have this problem. As I stated originally, all these computers can launch EVO and login to the "shell" fine. The problem is when you try to run any program (i.e. IN-A, IN-B, WO-A, etc), EVO hangs without any error messages. The only way to recover is to go into task manager and close both tasks associated with EVO-ERP. The (2) tasks are:

EVO ~ ERP - The "Shell" which runs fine on these workstations

Addsum TAS Premier 7i - The program you are trying to run (i.e. IN-A, IN-B, etc.) which is were the problem is.

If you close the "EVO ~ ERP" task then you can see the "Addsum TAS Premier 7i) window which was hiding under the "EVO ~ ERP" window. There is a dialog box in the "Addsum TAS Premier 7i" window that says "A call to an OS Function Failed". This all started after this last update when the runtime was updated.

WIN 98 versus WIN 98 SE maybe?  Different anti-virus?  Something has to be different between the ones that won't work and the one that does.

The (1) win98 workstation that works is win98 (not SE). The other workstations that don't work are a mix of win98 and win98se. All workstations have the same anti-virus (NOD32) installed. The only background processes running are explorer, systray, and the anti-virus. System resources are in the 75% range or higher on all machines. The only change has been the update to EVO-ERP. We were previously on the 2/28/06 update which none of the machines had troubles with.

This may sound dumb, and I am sure you have already checked, but after the EVO update, the first time a user logs in, you get a prompt to update the runtime.  Did anyone answer "NO"?

Yeah, the runtime looks the same on all machines, which looks different from the old runtime. We had skipped the May update, so we updated directly from the 2/28/06 update to the 8/11/06 update. I don't know if the runtime was changed for the May and/or August update. As far as the dialog box to update the runtime, it looks like it updates the runtime if you hit "OK" or not.

In case anyone's interested, the fix for our win98 workstations not running EVO after the August update  was to reinstall the Pervasive workstation client on the affected machines.
