So.........how do you make the jumping go away Cool

I'm still a little confused as to why it's jumping still for some people. Can you answer for me the 4 questions I posed before:

1. What Operating System? (Including what version of Windows)
2. What Web browser? (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc)
3. What Resolution?
4. Did you change the font settings to make the fonts bigger?

Those four questions will help to narrow this down.

Also, is there a view to show just the topics that have had new posts, since the last login?  It's just a question, but there are one or two forums that I frequent that do that -- it's very affective for quick browsing of active topics.

It doesn't seem like there is such a view. However, you can mark all topics viewed when you visit the forum and then when you come back later it will show you which boards have new posts and if you click on the board you'll see which topics have new posts. But no way of automatically seeing JUST the one's with new posts.

Being able to collapse the categories makes a nice, compact view. I like it.

Windows 2000
IE6

The flashing news in the page header is alternating between 3 and 4 lines of text (in my browser) causing the screen to jump.

Ok, that info is helpful. I suspected that it would be something like that. Medium text size is the default but 800x600 is way under what I use (I'm under 40) so I never saw the problem. I'll modify the template sometime today to allow more space so that it doesn't jump.

It did that when the new software was first installed but the ISTech graphic is a lot bigger now and it doesn't do that for me anymore. It would be helpful to know the following info:

1. What operating system?
2. What web browser?
3. What screen resolution?
4. Did you increase the font size?

I ask all of that because so long as the news text is less height than the ISTech graphic you should get no jumping.

The changing info under the header date keeps the screen jumping up and down as the number of lines in the message changes.  Very disconcerting!

Answer to this problem is simple...widen the window.  I'm getting slow on the uptake in my old age.

Gee, I'll be 44 on Monday and my screen res is 1280x1024. It might help that it's a 19" panel.

Don't lower your res, up your screen size!  Roll Eyes

Ok, I fixed the display glitch for those who were experiencing it. It was only effecting people who were in 800x600 resolution. Still, those people won't have it happen now.

Under the "Last Post" column, the post listed as "IN:yada yada" is a link to that post. Very nice. Much better than jumping to the thread and having to scroll to get to the post. Especially if you're like me and don't notice the multiple pages right off.

Not to sound unappreciative, but what I find most helpful on other forums is when you open a thread you can select "Go to First Unread" and it takes you to the first response that is new since you last visited. If there have been 10 responses since you last visited and you are taken to the very last one, it's not really any more helpful than starting at the top of the page, IMHO.

Just an observation...

The PSQL General Issues still has problems realizing that there is nothing new there. It shows New Messages even though there aren't any. Once in a while on the old forum I could get it to clear by Marking All Posts as Read.

Now I can get the Main Screen to show that there are no new posts by Marking All Read, but if you go to the PSQL page it still shows a whole bunch of individuals as New.

Not a big deal, just letting you know.

This is very helpfull too, as is what I posted yesterday.  There are some forums that you can elect to show only new posts since your last visit -- this way you don't HAVE to look down through all of the topics to see what's new.  MAJOR time saver.

While we're on the topic of things that would be nice:

I've been on other forums where the notification emails have a snippet of what was said. In the case of fairly short replies the notification email contains the whole reply. This is kind of nice because it allows you to figure out whether you really want to go to the forum and respond and/or read more or whether you can just leave it alone.

But, while I agree with the two issues brought up, I'm afraid I'm no PERL programmer and so it's unlikely that I'm going to be implementing such changes. However, I can bring up the issues on the YaBB forum to see if the developers of the forum software will think about adding such things.
