Non Inventory Item WO Costing?
02/27/07 at 14:14:34

We have been always using a non-inventory type part number called "MISC" to create WO's for miscellaneous labor requirements on our production floor (very small one time only jobs).  These jobs were only for our internal processes and were never billed out to any one.  Now as I'm doing my year-end reconciling of various accounts, I wonder where the labor costs attributed to these MISC WO's would show up?  I can get the amount from transaction or WO reports, but I don't know where the offsetting account would be.  We do not use GL posting, we use Quickbooks and transfer month end inventory costing figures from the IN-N-A report to post to the GL, but I cannot find any reference to any transaction with MISC on the IN-N-A report.

They may be going to overhead accounts.  Depends on how you have the MISC item setup.  I use some WO's to capture labor but I have them posting to indirect labor account.  Also, what type of WO are you setting up for the misc?  I use an "I" when setting up misc or indirect items.

I didn't realize that there was an "I" type of work order.  If I use that type will those figures be included on the IN-N-A inventory report?   I have been backing out my indirect labor WO costs from this report.  Would be nice if that happened.

The main advantage of using an "I" type work order, and it's a big one for me, is that the work order is not included in the WIP summary report JC-M.  This means that I can get a meaningful total of what is in the WIP GL account; since the I type work orders are expensed and not captured in WIP, when they are included in the WIP summary the WIP total is over-stated.
We use the GL and so the class code of the "I" type part number specifies where the labor is captured.  However, I just ran the AI-C report which I presume you use and the labor issues are all lumped together in that report.  I guess if I was not using the GL I would be exporting this report to excel and sorting by part number, or creating a report in Access/Crystal Reports.
I don't think anything will include the "N" type part number on the IN-N-A report. They have no "inventory" value since they presumably have been expensed.  I may be wrong about this though!

IN-N-A will include transactions for type N items.  They do not have on-hand inventory value but they do have transactional value.

Yes I can see transactions in Issues for these part number Work orders, but in WO receipts the value is $0.
