New-style Notes: Types?
03/27/07 at 06:09:31

Is there any info about the new notes? I see the field "Type" in the upper right, but there are no choices in the drop down. Where do we add these choices? Is this just for hide/unhide? How do I hide one of these new notes from the customer? We need a HOWTO in the Wiki.

Yeah, I'd like some additional info on this as well, like what's the 'Type' field for.  Also, I did a test and added a 'Note' to an item -- all's good, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to edit the note.

Okay, well never mind about the editing question.  Apparently you can add a note in IN-A, but you can't edit it or add another... you have to do that in IN-B.  undecided

IN-A is Inventory Inquiry. You can't write to the files in Inquiry mode..

The types are whatever you want to create. SM-N lets you enter Notes types.

Well, IN-A did let me create a note, but I had to go to IN-B to add another or edit an existing.  ODD!!!

Thanks for the info on SM-N.  It looks like HID and STD are there by default, so I have to ask, if a note is pegged to STD, where does this 'note' show up?  HIDden seems to be obvious.

Looks like you can add a note from the lookup screen, too.

In WO-A I can add and edit notes, but I can't set the type. The drop down box is empty.

Is the Notes function going to work in drill downs once the SO-A program migrates to T7? Currently, if I look up a part, then look at shipments for that part, I get nothing when I click on the Notes icon, even though that SO in question has notes. Will the notes become available once the T7 version is out? Will WO notes be visible? PO notes?

That is my intention, yes. The notes will be everywhere, but for now there are two sets of notes, the classic notes system, and the Evo notes. As we convert programs we will also be converting the notes. APA, ARA, INA/INB and WOA notes are already converted.

You need to add notes types in SM-N first to get types.

The question remains, what do the types do or where can they be used? I created a type, but the WO notes don't see any types for some reason. IN-A notes seem to work fine. Are new notes types that we create hidden, standard, neither? IOW, do they print when you say yes to Print Notes? or Print Hidden Notes?

Ditto, and thanks for expanding on my original question.

I, too, need a fuller explanation on the notes as I am getting questions from Accounting,
who are heavy users of the notes field.

Is there some good documentation on it somewhere?

Here are some things we have found out on Work Order Notes.(posted in a different thread under MFG)

"Notes" does not print intuitively in work order travelers.  After much trial & error, I found that only one note can be selected to print.  If I want to track name/date/time on notes, I can only print one of them.  If I want all to print, I would have to enter them under one entry log and lose tracking.  I found that in order to print any note, I had to first make it appear in the text box of the print notes screen. Notes do not automatically show up.  I can make them appear if I click the first note, then click the note I want to show up.  Then hit exit and print.

Again this is very counter intuitive and cumbersome.

How can we print more than one note on a WO?

We are trying to come up with a easy way to print notes.  Problem is (lets take an easy one.. PO's) you could have notes for
 1) the vendor
 2) for that PO#
 3) Each Item
 4) If the item is tied to a WO then WO Notes too

Each one of those could have multiple notes and note types.

So when printing in PO-B how do I prompt the user? 4 different popups one after the other and let you tag multi notes each time? now that would be cumbersome..

So I need an idea.. anyone have a suggestion?

Keep in mind this will have to work for WO travelers too, and that is a monster...

 undecided

Well... How about one pop up that has a checkboxed listbox with all note types. You can click a check for each type you want to print. Also, on the same form have a checked listbox for each note location (vendor notes, PO notes, item notes, wo notes, etc).

And heres a crappy example picture of what I'm talking about:
