IN-B adding a link using the link button  the link wont add.\
you can creat the link on screen BUT

I have my link working but I want to edit the system to add an alternate program to open a file, specifically Acrobat to open a pdf

How do I do this?

You shouldn't have to.  IE generally knows to call Acrobat to open PDF.  However, in other cases, you should be able to select Other and identify the program to use to open the link.  Then give the program a name (ADOBE) and then define the actual program.  Since people can install programs to paths other than the suggested default, you should just name the EXE and not the path, then for each user add the path to the environment variables in Windows.
