Spam Protection Program Experience/Recommendations
06/12/07 at 12:03:48

Anything to recommend for spam protection these days?  Someone suggested Red Condor but has no experience with it.  Does anyone have (or know anyone who has) experience with this program?  Or recommendations of any others?  We are innundated and its such a waste of time to sift through.

Thanks, Lori

As a well known open source advocate I must suggest SpamAssassin. Usually it's run on the mail server (probably at your ISP but locally if you run your own server). Spamassassin can put your email in a different folder if it's spam or just mark it at as spam. There are ways of running it local on your machine but it's really better if it runs on an email server. Anyway, it's what we use here and spam is cut down drastically. Probably to 5% or less of what it used to be like.

KKMFG, thanks for your response.  Do you find a lot of customer e-mails end up in the spam folder or has it been pretty successful at weeding out the garbage from the messages you want to receive?  I presume someone scans through the spam folder weekly or so to verify?

We use MDaemon email software from a company called ALT-N Technologies.

SpamAssassin is integrated into MDaemon.  It works very well.

Valid emails going into the Spam folder are very rare. I can't say it's never happened but hardly ever.

Also, if I were you I'd go with something like KevinD suggested. SpamAssassin is a good backend or ISP item but if you are running on your desktop you'll want something more user friendly.
