Child proof WO-C
08/08/07 at 11:52:21

Our shop would like to print various "forms" we have created from the traveler.  However, there are too many options on the WO-C screen that we don't want them to change (accidentally of course).  How can we give them a screen that will only have the WO number and the drop down of the rtm's available to print?

Crystal reports. We went to CR travelers about three years ago.

An even better idea would be to use PHP to generate PDFs. I have that on my to-do list  Wink

Additional questions regarding crystal reports:
We have never used them.  We have 22 networked computers.  Only a 2-3 people would actually be creating reports.  Others would need to view and print.

Is there a network version or are they generally used as stand-alone?
Can operators print with ease?
If I do PDF's do I then have to buy adobe for each computer?
Is there a certain version that works well with EVO?
Can bar codes be created in crystal?
Anything else I should know?

Thanks

PHP is a scripting style language (a type of programming language) which is normally used for websites. That's why you occasionally see .php on the end of web addresses. However, it's fairly general purpose. It's also well suited to database aware web apps and thus also fairly well suited for database aware desktop applications.

It's website is www.php.net

If you don't know a thing about computer programming then I suppose the key piece of info you could bring out of this is that someone who DOES know PHP could potentially use it to create reports. PHP can generate PDF and FLASH files so it's output can be quite nice.

You'd likely want to have someone create a stand alone Crystal report (as we did) that asks for the WO number prefix and suffix (or a range of them) and sends the output to a printer. You could probably find a consultant to do that right through this forum.

I am very interested to know the answer to this also.  I am looking at Crystal reports as a better alternative to Access which I use now.  (This topic should probably be posted in the Crystal reports section--)

There is a server edition, but it is pricey. It provides reporting services, distribution, and has web delivery options. It costs accordingly.

We use the developer edition, which does allow me to package aps with CR output.

However, I've found it faster and more cost effective to work with Internet/Intranet applications, except when printed forms or reports are the primary output requirement.

Reading over your question again, it dawned on me that we are actually doing something like this. When using WO-C, my users have been trained to just tab to the WO number boxes, enter the numbers, then hit the F10 key. We have two different forms from which they can choose (they are named nearly the same so that they are easy to find in the look up). Bam, done. Because I have saved the settings universally, it works every time.

I have done the same with a number of these "screens full of two many options" and it seems to work well. One place where I can't save the settings is inside the second layer of SO-N. The embedded WO-K-D will not save settings ("Prompt for Work Order quantity?" and "Consider All Locs. or WO Loc. Only?").

We do the same thing. The problem may come up if you need to make different settings for the different forms.

If you CAN use the same settings for everyone, and you still have to worry about "childproofing" you may have different problems to address....

the Server version of Crystal reports is very pricey as noted above. I usually have my customers install an inexpensive Crystal Report Viewer on workstations where users will run the crystal reports.

that allows me to create Reports geared to the type of data and format that you want to present.  Any Crystal Report can then print directly to the Printer, or export to Excel or text, or even a PDF !!

That sounds like a great solution for us.  We will have only one or two report writers, but plenty of readers.
Thanks!

If we create a report that is similar to the Traveler, will the viewers be able to put in different work order numbers to pull up what they need to see, or do the Reports/traveler already have to be created for a particular work order?

In ours, a pop-up asks which WO (or range) we wish to print. We also have a box to choose preview or print.

I have installed the Viewer and can only look at already generated reports (old data). I tried saving a report without data, thinking that maybe it would realize it needed to be refreshed, but no, I got a message that said "There's no data in the report so ya ain't gonna see any. Open the report Designer, and Save the Data with the Report".

(CR v11 - finally upgraded from 8.0... for just $99)
