Deleting Obsolete Inventory
08/30/07 at 08:40:43

I have alot of issues.  I'll start with one for now.  I am deleting inventory and an error comes up telling me I can not delete-is present on sales order or it's on a work order.  When I go to look the item up, there are no open sales orders or work orders.  How can I delete the items or get rid of that error?

They do not have to be open.  It looks for any history.  I have solved this before by purging old SO's (SM-J-J) and by Archiving Work Orders(SM-J-B).
Hope this helps.

If you do not want to purge or archive (we have never purged old SOs), you could choose to change the status to "D" for deleted, which pops up a message if someone tries to use the item. This works out for us.

I understand that changing the status will give you a warning, but without purging all old/archived history there is no way to get rid of the part number totally?

You're right about what it does, but it's actually for "Discontinued", the logic is that you might still have some on hnad that you want to sell. I think that D status will not allow them on WOs (except when created through SO-N...) or POs, but SOs are ok.

I made all the items inactive, and marked them disconinuted.  It is on items that have been discontinued for 1+ years and we have 0 on hand.  Not real sure if I want to purge all old S/O's or not.

Purging Annual Inventory

ok, next question...I'm having issues purging old inventory counts.  I was able to do some of them but there are 3 that will not purge.  Thee error is "no locations", that's all if gives me.  How can I fix that one?

Yes. Purging old SO's is SM-J-J under the System Mgr menu, and archiving old WO's is SM-J-B. Both allow you to do ranges by number or date.

You may have deleted the locations that were in the frozen inventory or something. You may need to purge them by reinitializing some tables or running a SQL statement to empty them. I did this awhile back, but I'd need to look up the table names, etc. Maybe Lynn will jump in on this before I get a chance to look it up.

Sorry, was working from memory. For us it means the item has been deleted from our price list. We don't obsolete anything because we repair our equipment, even if it is 20+ years old.

I'll try the SO and WO thing and see if that works....would that be the same Lynn that I've been emailing?

Also, I understood what you meant by the D, everyone's system works a little different.

I'm new at this DBA stuff, so you have been helping me out quite a bit with answering my questions, there are alot of issues here that I've been trying to resolve.  If I would have known there was a forum I would have been on here weeks ago.

also, I'm not sure about the locations thing, I have no idea if there were any set up, I was told there weren't, but again, I'm still going through alot of these things now.
