Swapping two Server names
10/19/07 at 12:49:55

I have a live server, called DBAServer, and a beta server, called DBAServer2.  I would like to have the beta server become the live server with as little downtime as possible.

Can anyone tell me if the Windows environment (or the Pervasive environment, or the DBA software itself) will have any "issues" if I were to rename DBAServer to DBAServerOLD, change its IP, and then rename DBAServer2 to DBAServer and give it the original server's IP?  These are Winnt4 servers.  The theory is that it will be a seamless change to my clients - they will be logging into the new server without me having to re-map drives and rerun setup on each client.

I bounced DBA around the way you described on NT4 servers several years ago with no issue.  We were using Pervasive 2000i.  We have also done the same thing from NT4 sp6 to a W2k3 server.  We upgraded Pervasive to 9.x at that time.  However when migrating to the W2k3 server we changed the ip address.  We wanted to make sure that if something failed in the migratiojn process that we had a complete hot backup plan in place.  We left the old server dark for 2 weeks to see if we missed anything or corruption.  None was reported.  I strongly recomend a confirmed good backup of course.
