Restart VPN Topic
11/30/07 at 08:22:11

I'd like to restart the topic on VPN use of Evo. It seemed to be going well, but then fizzled out before we got enough info for a Wiki entry. My hope is to give my users the fastest VPN experience possible. We are disbanding an office by spinning the people into the field, so we won't have a WAN for them to count on. They will all be using Evo through VPN clients exclusively.

There were differing opinions on the usability of VPN due to speed. Some said it was fine, most said it was slow. There was talk of UDP vs. TCP, compression vs. not, various clients, etc. If you are willing, please share your setup, client, what does work, what didn't work and what kind of speed you are seeing for general tasks like processing an invoice or creating a new part with IN-B.

I hope to write a Wiki entry from the source material we generate here.

I suppose that a link to the old discussion would be of some use here:

I'm not so interested in the whole topic any longer. The owner has property around the business and recently built a house 500 feet away. We wired up wifi antennae and setup an encrypted link that way. So we really don't need VPN for him, his house is local to the business subnet now.

I still live a ways away though...

Which brings up the topic: Is it better to use something like VNC that just sends the screen image over or is it better to go VPN where you locally run the programs. Personally, after having seen how poorly Evo and Pervasive run over a VPN link I think I'm leaning toward VNC. VNC is also available for free and is something almost like terminal server but not quite. Instead of running on the server you VPN to your work machine and remote control it. And instead of geting the GDI messages you get screen shots. Still, over a T-1 link one can get enough screen shots per second to be useable.

We use UltraVNC for this.

It works very well and is a very active open source project.

Another Cool feature of UltraVNC is the ability to connect without installing any client software.
You can remote control your machine with a browser.

VNC or Terminal server is the way to go.  We have tried running the apps locally thru VPN  and is it just way too slow (especially if you are used to being on the local network).

For us it is not a matter of choosing TS or VPN. We are moving away from TS to VPN for a number of reasons. I have done a lot of work to give my users tools to access Evo data from their web browsers, and even the ability to submit orders and RMAs. The trick now is to give them the ability to occasionally edit orders, prices, customer info, and products over their VPN with the least amount of pain. We're talking about salespeople and field techs here, people who do little work and have no patience  Cheesy
