Microsoft Live Update kills ODBC
12/12/07 at 07:21:33

Tim Goldstein just sent me this - figured it would probably affect some people.

Microsoft has this thing they download every month during live update called Malicious Software Removal Tool.  It only effects Windows XP, Vista and Servers that have the firewall turned on (Most server do not, mine does for VPN, Dial back)  If the firewall is turned on,  Windows update, last month, turned on a block for port 1583 (the main port for Pervasive ODBC)!  Thus the DSN will no longer be available on the server.  That means users can longer access datasets with Access, Excel, or Crystal.  To fix the problem.  Go into the firewall on the server and reopen port 1583.
