Windows Vista and Terminal Services
12/13/07 at 10:37:44

For reference for those who insist on running Vista before Service Pack 1 is released.

Remote desktop terminal services are available on Windows Vista and will run on Longhorn just fine( However Longhorn has not been released as of this typing!)

If you try to attach to a Windows 2003 or 2000 server,  you will see two things:

Problem 1: The remote computer is running a version of Windows that is earlier than Windows Vista.
The remote computer is configured to support only the RDP security layer.
Contact your network administrator or the owner of the remote computer for assistance.

Do you want to connect anyway?

Solution: This is caused because Vista Doesn't like to use RDP or NetBios.  to fix this problem go to the advanced tab and select “always connect, even if authentication fails” in the drop down.

Problem 2:  When connecting to the remote desktop session,  Terminal services appears to freeze, will give a disconnect then reconnect over and over again.

Solution 2:  This is caused by Windows Vista's "TCP Auto Tuning" Feature.  The OS keeps changing the R Window value for TCP/IP.  Why they are doing this I don't have a clue!  Others ahve tried this with disasterous results.  There are two ways to fix this:

1: create a new shortcut on the desktop. Enter the command “cmd” as the shortcut command.
Right-click on the shortcut and select “Run as Administrator”. This will open up a DOS window.
Enter the following command
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

2Shockedpen up an Elevated Command Prompt
Enter the following command to disable auto-tuning
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

Still seeing some other slightly strange behaviour with Windows Vista but nothing serious.

Hope it helps,

Tim
