How exactly does SM-J-L Change Part Numbers work? Does it go through everything and make the changes?  What about open orders, open work orders, purchase orders, BOMs that have the part # on it, etc.?    If we change a part that is ABCDE to be ABCEDF, and it's a component of a couple dozen other parts, do all the corresponding parts' BOMs also get changed?  In our case, part ABCDE shows up "where used" for at least a few dozen other parts in the system.
 
Is this a utility where we have to do it all at once, where we can't schedule the time to get a few parts at a time done?  Since it has to be done with no one on the system, and it could potentially take a long time for each part, it seems a bit daunting to think we  have to do it all at once, especially given the number of part numbers we need to update.
 
Please, I need some help/advice here before we think of proceeding.

Thanks for the reply, Mike.  Allen or Lynn, can you confirm what Mike is saying?  Can you give me any additional input?  What is your recommendation as far as doing any preparations (besides the backup) prior to running this?

I ran it last night on two of our largest parts and just watched the process.  It did indeed appear to check every table, including the history tables, and when it found a record to be changed in a table it displayed on screen the "Record Found!" message.  So, I asked Walter this morning to just look at parts and associated things like Work Orders, Sales Orders, Purchase Orders, costs, run some reports, etc. to see the changes and see if there are any issues.  Hopefully there will be none.  We have about 200 parts that need to be updated, so we want to be sure the test was good.

Actually - I finally remembered the quirk  (gad the memory goes fast)
 
 
You have a BOM in the system and you generate a WO for the assembly.
You discover that the BOM is incorrect and edit the BOM.
If you reprint the traveler, it will still show the uncorrected BOM.
 

Mike is correct.  If you simply edit a BOM or Routing (BM-A and RO-A) and work order(s) already exist for the parent item, those changes will not appear on the pre-existing work orders.  Also, the BM-E and BM-F Component Replace and Delete utilities only work on the BOM Master and do not touch pre-existing Work Orders.  But SM-J-L gets it all.
