Change part numbers in tables
11/06/08 at 13:38:03

Hello,
I have a question regarding the change of part numbers.

Is it possible to change part numbers in the tables?

I am new with DBA.  My prior experience was as an IT Manager with a company that ran a software running on Foxpro.  With that software, I was able to VERY CAREFULLY go into the tables, and make changes if I deemed it necessary.

The part numbering system here was not thought through, and I would like to renumber parts without losing history.

Just wondering if it is possible to do this in DBA/ Pervasive.

thanks,
Pam Bailey

SM-J-L is used to change Item Numbers.

It will actually go and change them in ALL subsidiary files like inventory transaction, Sales Orders, Purchase Orders,
Work Orders, BOM's,  etc.
This keeps everything in sync.

The few times we have used it, it has worked perfectly.

Hope this helps.

If you need to change many parts (rather than a few one at a time) we do have an add-on to SM-J-L that allows you to load a 2 column CSV file with Old Part, New Part and have the program change the whole list.

Hello,

I have another question along the same lines.

Is it possible to make changes to the descriptions of large groups of part numbers?

Our descriptions are not in  a format that is consistent.  I prefer not to  have to go into IN-B for each part number individually, in order to change the descriptions.    Much too time consuming.

Is there a way to change the descriptions perhaps from the tables?

Thanks,
Pam

If you are using Evo, and you have ADMIN access, then you can Edit in the grids.  Go to IN-B and bring up the list of part numbers.  You should have an Edit button on the top of the screen. If you Click this you can edit live in the grids.. *** BUT BE WARNED *** this is a Pure Edit if you mess up there is no going back. and there is no Validations done so it is to be used at your own risk.

Better solution is to export the parts and descriptions to a spreadsheet and clean them up using Excel.  Then follow the instructions below to import the corrected descriptions back in.

Thank you so much for the information!

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with the term "EVO"?  We are on the "old" DOS unsupported version of DBA.
Will these fixes still work for my version?

thanks,

Pam -

Maybe this will help (since you are admittedly new to the world of DBA)

You are probably actually using the Windows (well, sort of) DBA Classic because I don't think the true DOS version was available after version 99.2 in 1999.  If you load the program and the splash screen is a guy in a red jacket with bad hair standing on a box, that is DBA Classic.   If that is what you are running, you can click Help - About and get the specific version, which can be helpful to us when you ask questions or report issues.  It is likely 2002.4 or 2004.1 but it could be something older.  It may not be supported by the folks at DBA but it is certainly supported by IS Tech Support.

The versions other people here are referring to include DBA Classic with IS Tech Support updates (which is what you have but with updates and bug fixes we have provided over the past 6 years) or Evo-ERP (also called Evo) which is the same thing but with a true Windows based interface enabling functions such as email and enhanced forms editing.  www.istechsupport.com/evolution.php for details.

Thank You Lynn.

We definately have DBA Classic.   You described the guy on the box to a T, and our version is 2004.1.

We will be having a meeting next week to discuss service for DBA.  My vote will be a resounding YES for your service.  If this experience is any indication,  you have wonderful service.

In the mean time, how do I get into the "grids"?

thanks,
Pam

The grids are Evo-ERP only.  You will have to sign up for our service and upgrade to Evo-ERP to get them.
