Image Links in DBA Classic
02/23/11 at 14:15:13

Ok, obviously I'm an idiot, but I can't figure out how to get an image link to work in the Items module.  I set up the link and file location (its a .gif) but when I click the camera button all that happens is that Internet Explorer opens up and runs a search on my file name.  Am I trying to use an EVO thing in DBA or is there a setting I'm missing.  At one point I did get a file to show up, but it hasn't worked since.

if you have long path names with spaces in them, you need to put them in quotes.  Cleanest is to set up a Global Path that is something like P:\DBAMFG\IMAGES\   (short folder names & no spaces) and put all the image link files in the common path.

Here - here.....Clean, short names work best.....Also watch the selection for using the global path if you are using a different directory for the link...If you say yes to the Global, but have the link in a separate directory, it won't look for it there.

We simplified the links by using  (X):\dbamfg\links as the Global - pictures of parts are  xxxxxx.jpg    drawings are dwg.xxxxxx.pdf (pdf's prints are smaller and everyone can view them)      etc.    That way you can always use the global directory, otherwise you have to type in the full path in the file name.

Ok, I moved the file, limited the names to one word, reset the path in the link.  Do I need to enter a program to use?  I click the camera and Internet Explorer opens up.

If you open up windows explorer - check out the file association for the type of file you are looking at (.gif)....find the file, highlight it and right click and select properties.  the second line down should tell you "opens with"....if you don't want it to be IE, click on "change" and select the application you want to use (make sure "always use..." is checked) and it should use that program from now on to open gif files.

I marked the file to open every-time with adobe (I'm using a pdf)  I still get explorer.

Maybe I'm not entering the link right.  I'm telling it "O" for Other and then entering the .exe file for adobe reader?

Sounds like you are describing the IN-B links screen....lets see....

OK - assuming you have just one link for this part.....(although you can certainly have more than one)
On the links screeen, the Order will be 1; the link will be the file name (xxxx.pdf); select Y for global path; make sure the global path points to the directory where your links files are; File associations should be I not O (this uses the windows default associations, otherwise O overrides them);  The other field can be blank.

As long as windows is set to associate .pdf files with acrobat reader....it should work

Note - if you global path is something strange, you either have to find out from Lynn where that setting is (I forget) - or you can just move the files into the global path directory.

Yes, I am in IN-B - I can't find any other place to add links.  I click the "Links" button and then "Add" I enter the image name as the link.  I click "Y" for global links then I check to make sure it the the correct file location.  I have set up a folder in the DBA tree called Images and the path is directed there.  Currently I have 1 image ( a pdf) in that folder.  If I double click on the image in the folder it automatically opens in Adobe Reader.  I leave the setting on "I" for Internet Explorer.  I set all the last settings to "L" and "B" respectively.  I save, then save the item.  I go into IN-A look up the part, click the camera and MSN.com opens in Internet Explorer.  cry

actually the I is for File Asscociation. which uses the default program that your individual pc uses to open that file type. aka, Adobe pdf reader for .pdf.

so, using the I then make sure the Other field is Blank.

if you're still having difficulties shoot me an email to contact you, i'll help you fix it.
