You could use item status E, which would pop up a warning if someone tried to put it on a Sales Order. It would also give warnings at other times, so people in production would need to be informed whether to ignore it. We use this to trigger a process. The pop up can be dismissed and the item sold as long as approval is received, but it at least causes the questions to be asked.
