RMA question

We are contemplating the RMA module.  We manufacture heaters and industrial ovens.  We often get back heaters either return or for repair and find that one or more of the components is missing.  It would technically be a different part number if it was returned without the safety device, but if we entered it as that, it wouldn't match the sales invoice that it went out under.  How should we handle this?  Should it go to S/R to have the components added back, then a return to stock.  Also, we don't currently use the S/R module either.  When heaters come in for repair, we put in an order for the heater repair part number that is the heater part number the way ot going out with an RW at the end of the part number to let us know that it is repair, then we send a bom out with all items showing zero and the shop lets us know what they used to repair the heater.    Any suggestions or comments regarding the RMA and S/R modules is appreciated.
